Reasons why Hurricane Florence is extremely unsafe

According to National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florence is expected to strengthen to a potentially Category 5 storm before it makes landfall somewhere along the South Carolina-North Carolina border.

Hurricane Florence has forced the cancellation of several Top 25 games this weekend, including No. 13 Virginia Tech's home game against East Carolina, No. 14 West Virginia's trip to North Carolina State and No. 18 UCF's game at North Carolina. By Monday, it was evident that the worst-case-scenario was becoming reality, as Florence exploded in strength from a Category 2 hurricane to a Category 4 storm with winds in excess of 130 miles per hour.

A hurricane watch is now in effect from Edisto Beach, South Carolina to the southern border of Virginia. He also canceled campaign events Thursday and Friday in anticipation of the storm.

As of Wednesday afternoon, Florence was hurling 125-mph winds as a Category 3 hurricane.

East Carolina, meanwhile, decided not to travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, for Saturday's game, citing imminent safety concerns before, during and after the storm.

It includes transporting supplies, equipment, fuel, or people to and from the areas hit by the storm.

Some areas could get deluged with 20 inches of rain, Myers said.

NC State and West Virginia officials will try to reschedule the game.

He later added: "Just had calls with South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper, and Virginia Governor Ralph Northam regarding the incoming storm. The threat will be inland, so I'm afraid, based on my experience at Fema, that the public is probably not as prepared as everybody would like".

This week is the expected peak of hurricane season, according to forecasters, so seeing these active storms churning through the Atlantic right now isn't fully unexpected.

The coastal surge from Florence could leave the eastern tip of North Carolina under more than 9 feet (2.75 metres) of water in spots, projections showed.

Florence will unload up to 40 inches of rain in parts of North Carolina. "There's no canned goods", Kristin Harrington said as she shopped at a Walmart in Wilmington. Duke Energy spokesman Ryan Mosier said operators would begin shutting down nuclear plants at least two hours before hurricane-force winds arrive.

"Well-built framed homes can sustain severe damage with loss of most of the roof structure and/or some exterior walls".

In addition to strong winds, Florence brings the threat of a devastating storm surge - as high as 6-12 feet in the area from Cape Fear, N.C., to Cape Lookout, N.C. All could face widespread "power and communication outages, impassable roads filled with debris and numerous large trees snapped and uprooted along with fences and roadway signs blown over". "Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months".

The storm's first effects were already apparent on barrier islands as unsafe rip currents hit beaches and seawater flowed over the road.

Hurricane Florence was upgraded to a Category 4 Hurricane Monday morning and it continues to build in size, strength and speed, says the National Hurricane Center.

Farther to the east, Hurricane Helene is now a Category 2 storm, but it's expected to curve harmlessly northward and weaken in the central Atlantic.

Millions of Americans are preparing for what could become one of the most catastrophic hurricanes to hit the eastern seaboard in decades, with mandatory evacuations already issued for parts of three east coast states.
