Free mobile roaming could end in European Union if no deal Brexit

Free mobile roaming could end in European Union if no deal Brexit

A no-deal Brexit would invalidate British drivers' licences in the European Union, force some British travellers to renew their passports and could see a return to expensive charges for using your mobile phone in Europe, the government has admitted.

A "no-deal" Brexit, the government cautioned, would make life for United Kingdom citizens and businesses more complicated, more expensive and more bureaucratic.

British motorists visiting European Union countries, which would include Northern Ireland residents travelling to the Republic of Ireland, will also need an International Driving Permit (IDP). But a paper on aviation that had been anticipated - amid warnings that planes could be grounded in an extreme scenario - is not due to appear.

He was asked about comments from British Brexit Secretary Dominic Raab that a failure to reach a deal on the withdrawal treaty would mean Britain not paying tens of billions of euros it has so far agreed to send to Brussels.

The UK also faces being shut out of the Galileo satellite programme, its ships being forced to provide security information before docking, and requiring new vehicle safety certificates under a "no deal" scenario. They also have a strong incentive to deny the United Kingdom a deal so attractive it might encourage others to follow the British example.

The latest batch of papers setting out government preparations and advice in case Brexit talks fail also reveal additional red tape for businesses trading with Europe and would even remove the United Kingdom from the early warning system for space debris falling out of orbit.

"If that doesn't happen, the United Kingdom will manage the challenges of no deal, so we make a success of Brexit".

Raab told BBC radio he did not believe May's government would lose a vote in parliament on the deal.

"With the level of uncertainty facing consumers and the economy, in part due to ongoing Brexit negotiations, forecasting is particularly hard", John Lewis said.

"This shows the ludicrousness of the Tory Brexit agenda and also how little knowledge, appreciation or care they have for people in areas like Derry, which is essentially a cross-border city, and the many thousands across the north who drive across the border every day to work or study".

Competition law expert Alan Davis of Pinsent Masons, the law firm behind Out-Law.com, said "the unanswered question of what will happen to these ongoing merger and competition investigations could concern businesses especially given how close we are to the exit date".
