Elon Musk’s SpaceX signs up first passenger for round-the-moon trip

Elon Musk’s SpaceX signs up first passenger for round-the-moon trip

Just days after conducting another successful launch of one of its Falcon 9 rockets, SpaceX has announced that it's CEO and Lead Designerr, Elon Musk, will be making an announcement regarding the first private passengers who will ride the company's Big Falcon Rocket (BFR) to a destination only 24 others have traveled to.

SpaceX is set to send a private passenger on a spaceflight around the moon soon, as it's now signed up its first customer for the trip.

Musk's SpaceX and Richard Branson's Virgin Galactic are among the companies attempting to commercialize space travel.

In 2009, space tourist Guy Laliberté flew to the International Space Station aboard the Soyuz TMA-16, leaving from Kazakhstan.

No one has flown to the moon since the final mission of NASA's Apollo program. The original 2018 launch ended up delayed as it took longer than expected to get the Falcon Heavy ready for flight.

Two more cargo missions would follow in 2024 to provide more construction materials, along with two crewed flights, according to earlier reports.

More details would be made available on Monday, it said.

The new strategy is to still fly around the moon, but using an even bigger SpaceX rocket still in development that has its own dedicated passenger ship.

American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin became the first men to explore the lunar surface in 1969, a moment seen and heard around the world when Armstrong declared "one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". We're probably looking at years of testing and planning before the BFR is ready to carry a human passenger, and taking them to the moon and back is much different than ferrying someone to the ISS.

The BFR is SpaceX's newest rocket, a super powerful launch vehicle with 31 engines and the capacity to lift 150 tons into space.
