The National Transportation Safety Board is sending a go-team to MA to investigate a series of gas explosions and fires that destroyed homes and buildings in Andover, Lawrence, and North Andover Thursday night.

Lawrence General Hospital said it was treating four victims with injuries related to the fires but did not provide details about their conditions.

All the state offices will be closed and nonemergency employees have been asked to stay home Friday in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover, state officials said.

Firefighters from the region on Thursday night responded to 60-80 structure fires in the three communities and about 150 emergency calls, according to MEMA chief Kurt Schwartz.

"We're OK. They're just doing their jobs", she said.

The Andover Police Department said in a statement that 35 fires in town have been extinguished.

At the peak of the situation, they say 18 fires were burning at the same time in Andover.

A man whose neighbourhood was among those affected said he ran into his basement to find the room was glowing.

Hundreds of natural gas technicians were to descend on Lawrence, Andover and North Andover in the coming days to restore gas service safely before electricity could be turned on, state officials said earlier Friday. Some of those who were forced to flee quickly as darkness fell Thursday attempted to return home Friday to grab supplies and belongings.

Minutes later, Nam says he heard a loud boom come from his neighbor's house and the ground shook.

At the height of the disaster, Michael Rivera, who narrowly escaped a house fire, said his city "looked like a war zone".

"Columbia Gas is investigating what happened on its system today", said Ken Stammen, a spokesman for NiSource.

Gas service was interrupted for 250 customers in Lawrence last month because of a line hit by a third party, according to the company. It was not clear whether work was happening there on Thursday, and a spokeswoman did not immediately return calls.

Columbia Gas of Massachusetts, he said, serves a residential/commercial (res/com) load "in a fairly small area around Lawrence, MA".

A teenager was killed and 25 residents injured after a series of gas explosions and fires rocked three U.S. towns north of Boston, according to the state government.

The utility company that serviced the affected homes, Columbia Gas, announced earlier Thursday that it would be upgrading gas lines in neighborhoods across the state, including the area where the explosions happened.

Since 2010, there have been 27 major incidents, 10 of which involved Columbia Gas - the most of any one utility company.

In nearby Methuen, which responded to the incidents, Police Chief Joseph Solomon said he thought about 25 homes were on fire in Lawrence.

In an interview with WBZ, Moulton said that "you see the best of the American spirit" at the shelters.

There were also 30 town police officers, 13 state troopers, and 209 members of the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council in town, too, he said.

Lawrence Police Chief Roy Vasque told The Eagle-Tribune that he's "never seen anything like this".
