Decision day in nasty Primary between Cuomo, Nixon

Decision day in nasty Primary between Cuomo, Nixon

"You can not be a progressive if you can not deliver progress". Schwartz, who has been a close confidante of Cuomo since the pair first worked together in 1994, then signed off on it, and the New York Democratic Committee Paid $11,000 to print and distribute it, reported the New York Times.

Results coming in Thursday night will show whether Nixon's liberal attacks on the centrist Cuomo resonated with voters in a season where left-leaning Democrats have won surprise victories.

Cynthia Nixon is running on a platform that includes raising taxes on the rich, increasing school spending, ending cash bail and legalizing marijuana - hoping to harness the same left-wing energy that already has delivered upset wins to high-profile liberal candidates in other primaries this year.

The charge is a familiar one among NY progressives, who fault Cuomo for the state's failure to pass its own DREAM Act, legislation to protect abortion rights and serious campaign finance revisions.

However, as outrage built over Cuomo's watery denial - his campaign pinned responsibility for the mailer on an anonymous "constituency outreach" volunteer - it emerged on Wednesday that the mailer was drafted by Cuomo's former special assistant David Lobl, now volunteering with his re-election campaign, and approved by Larry Schwartz, the governor's former secretary. But Sanders steered clear of the governor's race. And he increasingly made the race about pushing back against the policies of Trump and other Republicans in Washington.

Nixon further portrayed the governor, whose public service stretches back to his tenure in President Bill Clinton's Department of Housing and Urban Development, including almost four years as secretary, as insufficiently liberal for today's Democratic Party.

"That's what I want - a full load with cream cheese", she tells the deli worker.

Nixon's alleged support of the BDS movement was one of three bullet points used in a pro-Cuomo mailer that was sent out less than a week before Thursday's Democratic primary.

The governor was mocked for saying America "was never that great" during remarks criticizing Trump's "Make America Great Again" slogan.

The planned opening of the Governor Mario M. Cuomo bridge to replace the old Tappan Zee Bridge between Westchester and Rockland counties was supposed to bolster Cuomo's image as a can-do governor, but a last-minute delay changed that narrative. Cuomo's spokeswoman later acknowledged that two former aides volunteering on the campaign were behind the piece.

Registered party voters trickled steadily into polling stations in Manhattan, where Nixon - who espouses universal healthcare, rent controls, and fixing the decrepit subway - is thought to enjoy more support than in the suburbs or rural areas.

"It's an exciting day that we've worked so hard for and we're seeing so much excitement - so much excitement, so much enthusiasm, so much momentum - in New York City, across the state", Nixon told reporters as she cast her vote. She is also trying to capitalize on fatigue with Cuomo's leadership and corruption in Albany, the state capital.
