Pope calls bishops to 'child protection' meeting in February

Other clergy sex abuse scandals have occurred in countries including Germany, Argentina, Australia, Ireland and Chile.

The Vatican announcement came a day before Pope Francis is to meet with U.S. Catholic Church leaders.

A Vatican spokesperson said the meeting of the heads of national Catholic bishops conferences would take place February 21-24.

Earlier this year, Francis faced heavy criticism for repeatedly discrediting the victims of a notorious Chilean predator priest. He eventually admitted to "grave errors in judgment" and has taken steps to make amends, sanction guilty bishops and remake the Chilean episcopacy, which he accused of helping to fuel a "culture of cover-up".

Pope Francis reviewed for his considerations the finalized draft at their last meeting in June.

Pope Francis summoned to Rome the presidents of bishops' conferences around the world for a February 2019 meeting on the protection of minors, the Vatican announced on Wednesday, September 12.

The petition calls for a response to allegations from Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò that the pope learned of sexual abuse accusations lodged against former Cardinal Theodore McCarrick in 2013 and did not take subsequent action.

The cardinal archbishop of Galveston-Houston had requested a meeting with Francis some time ago, for the goal of asking for a Vatican investigation into McCarrick.

Cardinal DiNardo requested the meeting with Pope Francis in order to discuss the allegations in Viganò's letter which, he said in a statement, deserve answers.

He began to be publicly criticized last month after a Pennsylvania Grand Jury report said more than 300 priests had abused over 1,000 children, dating back to the 1940s.

The Vatican announced Tuesday that Francis will meet this week with two other USA cardinals, one of whom has said he wants a full-scale Vatican investigation of Archbishop McCarrick.

Catholic Church in United States are shaken by Grand Jury report that found 301 priests sexually abusing minors.

The pope is also facing scrutiny over not accepting the resignation of D.C. Cardinal Donald W. Wuerl after he was accused by the Pennsylvania AG report of covering the abusive behavior of predatory priests during his time as bishop of Pittsburgh from 1988 to 2006.

While Francis has said he will not speak about the charges, Hying's call for an investigation into Viganò's testimony echoes that of numerous other US prelates and also tens of thousands of Catholic laity.

On Wednesday, German media reported that a church-commissioned study on abuse in the German church detailed 3,677 abuses cases between 1946 and 2014, with more than half of the victims, who were mostly boys, aged 13 or younger.

Achieving the goals, he had said, would involve "consultation with experts, laity and clergy, as well as the Vatican".
