King: Serena 'totally out of line'

King: Serena 'totally out of line'

Tennis umpires reportedly are considering boycotting Serena Williams' matches in the wake of the tennis star's confrontation with chair umpire Carlos Ramos in the U.S. Open final.

Williams was facing Japanese worldwide Naomi Osaka in the final of the US Open on Saturday, as the American was chasing a record-breaking 24th Grand Slam title.

The furore only died down during the presentation ceremony after Williams pleaded with the crowd to stop booing, and Osaka revealed to DeGeneres what the former World No.1 said to her after leaning over to embrace her. I really don't. I think men and women are treated in this way or the other way depending on the situation.

The cartoon was a response to Williams' behaviour Saturday, when she was slapped with a hat trick of code violations late in the match for receiving coaching, smashing her racket, and arguing with the chair umpire.

"It's tough, but with experience you understand how you can control your emotions and how you can stay focused on what the task at hand is and that's just winning basketball games and not letting anything get in the way of that", he told Omnisport.

Belarusian player Victoria Azarenka, commenting on the coaching issue, said it bothers her to have inconsistent rules.

Williams was found guilty of code violations and fined US$17,000 - raising allegations that there are double standards for male and female players.

Tennis great Billie Jean King backed the American but Margaret Court, whose major wins record Williams was trying to equal on Saturday, expressed little sympathy for her.

"He's never taken a game from a man because they said 'thief.' For me it blows my mind".

An Australian newspaper defended its cartoonist on Tuesday after publishing a caricature of Serena Williams having a temper tantrum at the U.S. Open tennis tournament, which civil rights leaders, celebrities and fans condemned as racist.

Ramos called three rules violations against Williams during the event.

"Serena was out of line, there's no question, no one's saying she was a good sport", King said.

But Ramos has finally broken his silence regarding the backlash, speaking to Portugal's Tribuna Expresso.

"It's an unhappy situation but "à la carte" refereeing doesn't exist". "Don't you worry about me!" "They feel that no one has their back when they have to make unpopular calls".

Ramos' umpiring career will continue as he is expected to officiate the Davis Cup semifinal matches starting September 14.
