Djokovic tops del Potro to win U.S. Open, 14th Slam title

Djokovic's victory, coupled with his July triumph at Wimbledon, ties him with Pete Sampras for the most men's Grand Slam singles titles.

And Djokovic interrupted his on-court interview to congratulate world No 3 Del Potro on reaching the final despite his defeat. Not against Djokovic, who always seemed to have all the answers.

Djokovic and del Potro embrace.

Novak Djokovic, of Serbia, returns a shot to Juan Martin del Potro, of Argentina, during the men's final of the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018, in NY.

While the women's final between Serena Williams and Naomi Osaka will go down as one of the most dramatic and eventful Grand Slam finals in history, Djokovic focused purely on the task at hand as he slugged it out with Juan Martin del Potro.

The famously emotional Del Potro could not contain his emotions as he sat in his chair after the match and Djokovic made a point of consoling him.

Things looked ominous for Del Potro as Djokovic seized control early on, moving magnificently and constructing a number of superb points with precision striking. Against Djokovic, del Potro is 4-14 in his career, including 0-3 in majors.

"When I had the surgery in my elbow earlier this year, I could truly understand what Juan Martin was going through".

The game went so long that when it ended, with Djokovic holding to 4-all, spectators began leaving their seats, perhaps thinking it was time for a changeover, even though it wasn't.

It was a brief request, though, unlike her many other pleas for quiet, mainly as fans were shouting and chanting and clapping in support of del Potro. Later, after winning a point, Djokovic put that finger to his ear, as if to say, "Who are you cheering for now?!"

When it ended, thanks to a three-game closing run by Djokovic, he flung his racket away and landed on his back, arms and legs spread wide. "I've spent all my career learning with Novak, Roger, Rafa, seeing them winning these events very often".

"You can lose or win a trophy, but the love from the crowd, it could be even bigger than the tournament", del Potro said. It's fantastic. I don't feel sad that I couldn't win Grand Slams because of them.

"Difficult times but you learn from adversity, you learn when you're down, when you have doubtful moments, when things aren't working out as you want them to".

Asked who he dedicated the win to, Djokovic - who has won his last 13 matches after beating rival Roger Federer in the Cincinnati Masters last month - said: "To the support of the loved ones, my kids, my wife, my team of people, a small team of people that have been there with me through hard times as well".
