Dallas officer kills man after entering wrong apartment

Sad news to report out of Dallas, as a 26-year-old PwC associate was shot and killed by an off-duty Dallas police officer on September 6 after the officer mistakenly walked into an apartment she thought was her own.

Two women who live on the second floor near where the shooting happened said they heard a lot of noise late Thursday.

According to Dallas News, the unnamed officer shot Botham Jean, a graduate of Harding University, Arkansas who works at PricewaterhouseCoopers in Dallas after entering his apartment thinking it was hers.

Details were sparse and it was unclear why the Dallas police department remained so silent; unless, of course, it was trying to massage the implausible narrative it was trying to push surrounding the suspicious shooting.

It was not immediately clear how the officer got inside the apartment or what led to the shooting. On Friday afternoon, Dallas Police Chief U. Renee Hall requested a manslaughter warrant for the officer. "I love you with all of my heart", she wrote.

Jean described himself on LinkedIn as a "young professional, engaged in developing a career built upon integrity, dedication and relationships, leveraging useful technologies to gain an understanding of and add value in a range (of) industries, striving towards leadership in my career, my community, and society".

The victim was named as 26-year-old Botham Jean, who grew up in St Lucia and was an employee of accounting and consulting firm PwC.

The Department of Public Safety, which oversees the Texas Rangers, didn't immediately reply to a Saturday phone message seeking comment about the investigation. "We are in the process of obtaining a warrant based on the circumstances that we have right now", Hall told reporters. He graduated in 2016 from private Christian school Harding University, in Arkansas. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead. "Please join us in praying for Botham's friends and family", Harding University said in the statement Friday.

The officer's blood was drawn to be tested for drugs and alcohol. "The officer reported to the responding officers that she entered the victim's apartment believing that it was her own".

The officer involved was not injured in the incident and was placed on administrative leave while the police department conducted a joint investigation with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office into what they initially thought was an officer-involved shooting, Hall said.

"You want to think it's fiction ... and you have to grapple with the reality", he said. She walked into an apartment, mistaking it for her own, and found a man inside. The university said he frequently led worship and chapel services on campus. Neighbor Alyssa Kinsey told The Dallas Morning News that Jean helped her move new furniture into her apartment soon after she moved into the building with her family in April.
