British Airways hacked, details of 380000 bank cards stolen

BA says the breach is now resolved, but customers may have had their personal and financial information exposed if they made bookings in the last couple of weeks.

BA has launched an urgent investigation into the data breach which involved 380,000 bank cards. "The stolen data did not include travel or passport details", the airline said in a statement.

For now, British Airways states that its website is "working normally so future bookings will not be affected", per its post. The airline had notified the police and relevant authorities, it added.

"We take the protection of our customers" data very seriously'.

Parent company International Airlines Group said that it was "investigating, as a matter of urgency, the theft of customer data from ... ba.com and the airline's mobile app".

The airline added that customers due to travel could check in online as normal.

Rob Burgess, editor of United Kingdom frequent flyer website headforpoints.com, said: "Data breaches are part and parcel of the world we now live in, and criminal activity is getting ever more sophisticated".

"We are 100 per cent committed to compensate them", BA chief executive Alex Cruz told BBC radio.

He said that BA has a network of partners that monitor websites around the world and that one of those partners alerted the airline. The airline said affected customers should follow their bank or provider's recommended advice.

"Unfortunately this is likely to be another PR disaster for British Airways, especially as it includes tickets brought in their September sale".

Will I have to get a new card?

And in May 2017, BA suffered a major computer system failure triggered by a power supply issue near Heathrow which left 75,000 customers stranded.
