State of emergency declared in Mississippi

Gordon formed into a tropical storm near the Florida Keys early on Monday, lashing the southern part of the state with heavy rains and high winds. Preparations should be completed this morning as conditions will deteriorate quickly during the afternoon and evening. Edwards has also activated 200 National Guard members for Tuesday morning.

UPDATE 8:31 a.m.: The City of Fort Walton Beach said its solid waste and recycling service will continue as normal on Tuesday and Wednesday. City Hall and government offices closed Tuesday for nonessential employees.

Eight meteorologists are covering Gordon from New Orleans to Biloxi to Dauphin Island - and even Wiggins.

Along the coast tropical storm force winds of 40-70 miles per hour are possible, along with heavy rainfall through Wednesday morning. "There's no reason to be alarmed".

"We've just about got things cleaned up", Collier told WPMI. "We expect our citizens to be doing the same".

These are two very different scenarios and we need to monitor this very closely the next 5-10 day period.

Natural gas prices are trading sharply lower amid uncertainty over the impact of a hurricane that is growing in terms of size and wind speed over the Gulf of Mexico.

Hurricane season in the U.S. started on June 1 and will last until November 30. "Make sure that you and your family have a plan in place in case of disaster".

Forecasters with the NHC say surge on barrier islands of Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana could exceed 2' above ground level, particularly in point east of the storm's center of circulation where winds are the strongest. If Gordon's wind speeds reach 74 miles per hour (119 km/h), the storm will be classified as a hurricane, according to the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale. Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 80 miles from the center.

Once the storm moves ashore, rapid weakening is forecast. The area has already been heavily impacted by this summer's so-called "red tide"- massive algae blooms that have caused waves of dead marine life to wash up along the coast.
