Highway overpass collapses in India; at least 1 dead

The Majerhat bridge reportedly collapsed around 4:45pm.

At least 15 people were killed when a flyover under construction collapsed in Kolkata in 2016.

Earlier while interacting with media persons, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said that there were no reports of deaths but later one person was found dead while 19 others were reported injured. Of the injured, nine were admitted to the SSKM Hospital, while remaining seven were admitted to CMRO Hospital.

State minister Chandrima Bhattacharya said she has heard about the death of five persons but it is yet to be confirmed.

"Our team is focused on relief and rescue work", said West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee soon after the tragedy struck the state capital.

According to locals, a group of migrant construction workers lived under the portion of the bridge that collapsed, and rescue workers have been able to establish contact with at least four of them.

The immediate priority is rescue.

Banerjee said that thousands of people pass through the area and the government has to probe the accident.

An eyewitness claimed that some people in a minibus and private cars were trapped.

The army has released a statement to clarify that its forces have not being called to help with the rescue opertion but as the area is close to its field hospital, a detachment has been sent.

In two years, this is the second incident when a bridge collapsed during busy hours in the city.

"A part of the Majherhat bridge between Taratala and Mominpur collapsed around 4.30 p.m", a fire official said. My thoughts are with the families of the victims.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi termed the incident as "deeply unfortunate" and hoped for the speedy recovery of the injured.

TMC leader Derek O'Brien tweeted, "Watching scenes of Majerhat bridge #Kolkata collapse".

#05:20 PM: Rescue teams and ambulances arrive at the spot where part of Majerhat bridge in South Kolkata has collapsed.

CPM MP Mohammed Salim, who resides near the bridge, said, " In last one year several times, the locals several times complained of the cracks showing on the pillars.
