In debate with Nixon, Cuomo vows to serve full third term

Cynthia Nixon is no stranger to the stage, but she's never before had a platform quite like this.

Gov. Andrew Cuomo faced off against his opponent Cynthia Nixon Wednesday during the only televised debate before the NY gubernatorial primary election in September.

After accusing the debate host, WCBS-TV, of being too acquiescent to Cuomo's demands ahead of the debate, Rebecca Katz called for the event hall at Hofstra University on Long Island to be 76 degrees, the New York Times reported.

Cuomo is the son of the late Mario Cuomo, who was a three-term NY governor and considered a liberal lion.

"As soon as you do", Cuomo said. "His goal will be to make no news".

Nixon's outsider campaign has not had the money to buy television ads and so "the debate likely offers her biggest audience yet - but with the tough challenge of both proving her qualifications as a first-time candidate and knocking Mr. Cuomo on his heels". While she has a history of advocating on behalf of progressive issues, the governor has enacted real change, he said. Pressed on her plan to bring universal health care to NY, she spent 90 seconds walking through its potential fiscal impact.

Cynthia Nixon speaks at the Democratic gubernatorial primary debate, August 29, 2018, at Hofstra University in Hempstead, N.Y.

"If you stop lying, I will stop interrupting", Nixon shot back.

Nixon attempted to tie Cuomo to the recent conviction of his former top aide, Joe Percoco, on charges that he accepted bribes from companies seeking state economic development funds. "Unlike Cynthia Nixon, the governor has more important things to focus on than the temperature of a room", said campaign spokesperson Lis Smith. Nixon said the governor hasn't fought the White House hard enough. He is attacking everything we believe in NY.

"Ideally Nixon would have wanted this debate to happen three months ago", he said.
