Neil Simon Dead - Famed Playwright Passes Away at 91

According to a report by TMZ, he passed away on around 1 a.m. ET on Sunday morning, suffering from complications due to pneumonia.

Neil was well known for so many plays and won Tony Awards for The Odd Couple, Biloxi Blues, and Lost in Yonkers.

"It was wonderful to be in his life and for him to be in my life", he said, calling Simon a major figure in American culture.

"The good mechanic knows how to take a auto apart; I love to take the human mind apart and see how it works", he told the Paris Review in 1994.

Many of Simon's best-loved plays were adapted into movies, most with screenplays written by Simon: "The Odd Couple" (1968), "Only When I Laugh" (1981, based on his play "The Gingerbread Lady"), "Brighton Beach Memoirs" (1986).

"My mother and father were gone when I wrote it, so I did tell about the fights and what it was like for me as a kid hearing them". I have no reason to write another play except that I am alive and I like to do it'-Neil Simon. She suffered the most in all of it. I like writing for actors.

He was 91 years old. "Based on what? How amusing could I be at 15?" He studied at the University of Denver in Colorado until he was discharged from the Army in 1946, according to Biography.com. After running The Phil Silvers Show through the late '50s, Simon began writing for the stage. "You put that behavior in conflict and you're in business", Simon told The Paris Review in 1992. This is where I want to go. Simon's work was also honored with a Golden Globe and a Kennedy Center Honor.

"The Odd Couple" - a comedy about a messy sportswriter Oscar and fastidious photographer Felix, whose troubled marriages bring them together as roommates - is still an American classic today.

Notable Biographies.com reported that Marvin Neil Simon was born in the Bronx, New York, on July 4, 1927.

Simon was the American theater's most successful and prolific playwright, often chronicling middle class issues and fears.

In 1983 he gained the rare accolade of having a NY stage, the Neil Simon Theatre, named in his honor. "I write about the small wars that eventually become the big wars".

But there were other plays and musicals, too, more than 30 in all.

"I think, by and large, I've had my fair shake from the critics ..."

Simon said he misjudged the work.

Simon received the Pulitzer Prize in 1991 for "Lost in Yonkers", which also earned him a Tony Award. When it's 20 in NY, it's 72 in Los Angeles. According to IMDB, Neil Simon was also known for his colorful quotes, among them, "When it's 100 in NY, it's 72 in Los Angeles".

Pulitzer Prize victor Neil Simon who started as writer for TV greats Sid Caesar and Gleason, once had four plays simultaneously on Broadway.

"Neil has the ability to write characters, even the leading characters that we're supposed to root for, that are absolutely flawed".
