Trump says market would 'crash' if he were impeached

U.S. President Donald Trump lashed out at Michael Cohen on Wednesday after his former lawyer implicated him in campaign finance violations, accusing him of making up "stories" in order to get a plea deal.

"I'll tell you what, if I ever got impeached, I think the market would crash", he said.

"You would see - you would see numbers that you wouldn't believe in reverse", he said.

"I don't know how you can impeach somebody who's done a great job".

Trump was dealt severe back-to-back blows on Tuesday when Cohen pled guilty to illegal campaign finance violations and former Trump campaign chairman Paul Manafort was convicted of tax and bank fraud within minutes of each other.

Speaking anonymously to Vanity Fair, one Trump friend said, "Holy shit, I thought Pecker would be the last one to turn".

Trump tried to play down his relationship with Cohen, his longtime "fixer", who claims the president directed a hush-money scheme to buy the silence of two women who say they had affairs with Trump.

He declared that while he's attorney general "the actions" of the DOJ "will not be improperly influenced by political considerations".

With crucial House elections just 75 days away, last night one of the president's biggest supporters, Sean Hannity, also highlighted to his viewers that if Democrats win in November, the president will nearly certainly be impeached. "Thirty, 40 years I have been watching flippers".

In entering a guilty plea, Cohen said under oath that the payments were made "in coordination with and at the direction of a candidate for federal office", in clear reference to Trump. "It nearly ought to be outlawed".

"Cohen admitted Trump instructed him to break the law". Contributions of 200 words or more will be considered for publication.

In his first public comments, back in April, about his alleged affair with Stormy Daniels, Mr Trump denied knowing about the $130,000 (£100,000) payment made to the actress via Cohen.

The investigation into Cohen stemmed in part from a referral by U.S. Special Counsel Robert Mueller, who is investigating whether there was coordination between Trump's 2016 presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

Donnelly also said he has written to Mick Mulvaney, the acting director of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, to plead with him and the president not to abandon financial protection for service members.

It is the party's main argument to voters ahead of elections in which Democrats are expected to regain control of one, and possibly both, houses of Congress in November.
