Measles making a comeback in several states like Tennessee

MI is one of almost two dozen states being monitored for a measles outbreak.

While rare, measles is still common in many countries in Europe, Asia, the Pacific, and Africa, is sometimes carried into the U.S.by travelers, and can spread quickly in communities where people are not vaccinated.

The total number of cases per year in the U.S. usually hovers around 100, aside from 2014 when an outbreak led to 667 cases.

"Widespread use of the measles vaccine has led to a greater than 99 percent reduction in measles cases compared with the pre-vaccine era", the CDC said.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is monitoring cases of measles in 21 states, including Maryland, after noting an outbreak. After infection, the first symptoms only after 10-14 days, and the most acute phase of the disease lasts 7 to 10 days.

"Measles virus can live for up to two hours in an airspace where the infected person coughed or sneezed", according to the CDC. It was the greatest number of measles cases the country had seen since the disease was eliminated in 2000. After some time, small red bumps may appear on the flat spots and the fever may spike to 104 degrees.

In new Jersey reports about the threat of Contracting measles were reported in may of this year. In all of 2017, for example, 118 people from 15 states and DC had measles.

How can you avoid getting measles? Vaccination is the best prevention for preventing the spread of measles.

If you think your child has the measles, keep them home from school and contact your doctor immediately. Measles can be prevented with the MMR vaccine, which also protects against mumps and rubella. "MMR vaccine provides long-lasting protection against all strains of measles", the CDC official said.
