Amanda Duzak Trebach, who also survived the Charlottesville attack, told those at a pre-counterprotest organising meeting on Wednesday night that it's "imperative to confront the far right in order to not only block their hateful political ideas from being disseminated, but also to offer a solidly developed anti-racist" strategy.

Kibiriti Majuto, a coordinator for UVA Students United, said the students moved to another part of campus from the planned area to avoid feeling "caged". "We don't see no riot here". "C-ville fights back, and we are asking the world to fight back, too!"

A separate rally by far-right protesters will be held in Washington DC on the anniversary of the Charlottesville riots. Guns will be forbidden near the rally site, regardless of whether an individual has a permit to carry the firearm.

"We condemn in the strongest possible terms this egregious display of hatred, bigotry and violence on many sides, on many sides", Trump said, following the events.
