Hoops coach pleads not guilty in tourist death

He died in an area hospital on Tuesday.

A college basketball coach threw a punch that killed a New York City tourist who mistook him for an Uber driver, police said Thursday.

Jamill Jones, an assistant for Wake Forest men's basketball team, has been charged with assault in connection with a tourist's death in Long Island City, NY, according to the New York Post. He allegedly punched Sandor Szabo in the face, knocking him to the pavement, after Szabo knocked on the window of Jones' SUV early Sunday.

Investigators say Jones got out and punched Szabo, who fell to the ground and hit his head.

Jones, 35, of Kernersville, North Carolina, turned himself in to police today, accompanied by a lawyer.

A Florida tourist died in NY after he was punched by a man he probably thought was an Uber driver, his family said. "We simply hope that the public gives Mr. Jones an opportunity to litigate this matter in the court and not in the press".

"Wake Forest Athletics Director Ron Wellman has placed assistant men's basketball coach Jamill Jones on leave".

Szabo, 35, was a Florida resident in town for his stepsister's wedding on Saturday. Jones was released on his own recognizance and was ordered to return to court on October 2. The district attorney's office would not comment on whether there would be additional charges. We're going to say one thing and that's all.

Jones joined the Demon Deacons in May 2017 after serving as an assistant coach at UCF, VCU and Florida Gulf Coast, according to his biography on the university's website.

"He was fun to be with, interesting, and always interested", the company said.
