UK's May says Boris Johnson should apologize over burqa comments

He should not have used it, ' the prime minister said.

A majority of adults in the United Kingdom do not believe Boris Johnson's comments describing women who wear burkas as looking like "letter boxes" and "bank robbers" are racist, a poll has suggested.

The complaints will be assessed by an independent panel appointed by the Conservative party Chairman Brandon Lewis and the Chair of the 1992 backbench committee of Conservative MPs.

Some suspected Johnson's burka comments were meant to boost his appeal among right-wing members of the party.

Mr Johnson has been under pressure since writing a piece for the Daily Telegraph in which he suggested women who wear face veils look like "letterboxes" and "bank robbers".

Conservative peer Sayeeda Warsi, a former party chairwoman, accused Johnson of adopting the "dog-whistle" tactics of right-wing firebrand Steve Bannon, US President Donald Trump's former top aide.

Former foreign secretary Boris Johnson is known for his bombast and provocative stunts.

A statement issued by the group said: "In 2005, Boris Johnson said, "Islam is the problem" and 'Islamophobia is a natural reaction'".

Shortly after the publication of his article on Monday, a source close to Mr Johnson said that it was "ridiculous" that his views should be under attack.

Disciplinary action could lead to Mr Johnson being suspended or even expelled from the Tories, but would risk igniting civil war in a party many of whose members see him as the best option to succeed Mrs May as leader.

But a Sky News poll found that 45% of voters thought he should apologise, while 48% thought he should not.

However, there has also been a groundswell of support including from prominent backbenchers as Jacob Rees-Mogg.

In a Sunday column for The Telegraph declaring that the burqa should not be banned in the United Kingdom, Johnson made remarks about the controversial clothing that some people considered a dog-whistle for Islamophobia.

But the MP Nadine Dorries, retorted: "The people in Westminster who are so outraged are actually terrified that at some stage any day soon Boris may make a challenge for the leadership and Number 10".

He told LBC on Wednesday: "No, she's clearly wrong to have asked him to apologise".

Johnson was called upon to apologize but declined, according to his employers.
