Trump administration calls for 'Space Force' to be established by 2020

The U.S. military now consists of five branches - the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and Coast Guard - and a new one hasn't been created since the Air Force got off the ground in 1947.

US President Donald Trump is really, truly serious about starting up a Space Force as a separate branch of the military.

Mr Pence said the "time has come" for America to "prepare for the next battlefield" and secure America's "dominance" among the stars.

Former astronaut and retired U.S. Navy Captain Mark Kelly on Thursday said a separate military branch devoted to space was redundant and wasteful, and that while Pence was right about the threats in outer space, the military was already handling them.

"This idea seems to have come from one person who is not a space of military expert".

"For many years nations from Russian Federation to China, to North Korea and Iran have pursued weapons to jam, blind and disable our navigation and communication satellites".

The Defense Department is already active in space, of course, with the Air Force in charge.

Paul Scharre, a senior fellow at the Center for a New American Security, called a Space Force "a dumb idea", in an commentary on Defense One, which first reported some of the details of the plan.

The Trump administration aims to have the Space Force up and running by 2020, Pence said.

The Pentagon is laying the groundwork for a future Space Force, moving closer to an order from President Trump earlier this summer to create a sixth branch of the armed forces. The Administration's goal is to establish that branch by 2020.

The new command and reorganisation "should be budget neutral", Scott Pace, the executive secretary of the National Space Council, said in an interview.

"Eventually, it'll settle out, but you will go through years of thrashing".

"I think we need to have a longer discussion on this. I don't. I wouldn't vote in favor of it".

Speaking at the Pentagon, he said: "Today, other nations are seeking to disrupt our space based systems and challenge American supremacy in space like never before". The Pentagon and intelligence community has a host of sensitive satellites that perform all sorts of vital national security tasks, such as missile warning, precision-guided munitions, military communications and intelligence.

The document outlines how America's military is at risk in space due to adversaries pursuing "counter-space" capabilities to neutralize America's satellites during a conflict, such as by jamming or hacking them. And there are growing worries about cyberattacks that could target satellite technology, potentially leaving troops in combat without electronic communications or navigation abilities.

In a speech at the Pentagon, the vice president also announced plans to establish a new combatant command - U.S. Space Command - as well as a Space Operations Force and a new joint organization called the Space Development Agency. So, before we can "have the Space Force", as Trump put it, the White House will have to convince lawmakers that the USA really needs it.

But President Donald Trump is leaving the heavy lifting to his supporters ― at least where the logo is concerned. Mike Rogers, R-Ala., and Jim Cooper, D-Tenn., leaders of the House Armed Services Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, said in a statement.

"There will be no Millennium Falcon, no Jedis or Wookiees we are sad to report", the Fox News host said.
