Premier Ford expected to announce 'buck and beer' in the County

It was one of Mr. Ford's signature campaign promises during the spring election, and on Tuesday the Ford government announced it was going ahead with a plan to lower the minimum price of a bottle or can of beer to $1 from the current $1.25.

"We're bringing back a buck-a-beer to Ontario". "People in Ontario are mature enough ... to know when they've had one too many".

Today, the leader of Ontario introduced his plan to bring back the $1-per-beer price floor in time for the Labour Day weekend.

In 2008 the previous government chose to ban Buck-a-Beer by setting a higher minimum price and today the retail price floor sits at $1.25.

News of buck a beer's return was met with concern from safety groups and criticism from the opposition parties.

"Lower alcohol prices can lead to increased consumption, particularly among those with alcohol problems, and among young people, and that increased consumption can in turn lead to increased alcohol-related problems, including impaired driving".

The minimum retail price for beer was $1 in Ontario between 2005 and 2008, before the government banned it in 2008.

Forked River Brewing Co., London "We're not in any position to sell beer at a buck a beer without taking a large loss on it".

CTV News reports that breweries selling beer at $1 per bottle or can will receive no tax breaks or other direct financial support, but will be offered "lucrative incentives including prime shelf space and free advertising with the LCBO [and] other enticements [that] may include limited product discounts and in-flyer LCBO promotions".

"What it is", Ford said, "is putting money back in people's pockets".

"Is this the premier's priority?" The price floor will affect beer that contains an alcohol percentage below 5.6%.

As well, he added, "the respect and appreciation they will get from consumers will be priceless".

"You definitely won't see #FreshGLB take part in this", the Toronto-based Great Lakes Brewery wrote on Twitter. Brewers are not required to charge the lower rate and few in the province sell at the current minimum.

Last week, the Ford government reversed its promise to keep Ontario's basic income pilot going.

"A lot has changed, not the least of which is the cost of ingredients to make the product, the cost of labour", said Simmons. "The margins keep getting tighter and tighter and you want to invest in your company, to grow and create more jobs". This typically tends to cost more, but it allows us to make the best beer possible, instead of making the cheapest.

It is unknown if any additional Ontario craft breweries will participate.
