Republican Troy Balderson Declares Victory in Ohio Special Election

"Over the next three months, I'm going to do everything I can to keep America great again, so that when we come back here in November - get ready, we gotta come back here in November - I have earned your vote for a second time", Balderson told supporters.

The seat in OH opened up after Rep.

However, Tiberi resigned before finishing his term, forcing the special election to replace him.

O'Connor, a local county official, tried to project a moderate image, saying he would support new Democratic leadership in Congress and work with Republicans but also criticizing the Trump tax cut.

But Trevor Moffitt, a public health doctoral student at The Ohio State University who voted for O'Connor, said he felt Balderson's attacks on Democrats went too far.

Mr Trump himself campaigned at Mr Balderson's side just 72 hours before Election Day, a weekend appearance to help energise his loyalists in a district the president carried by 11 percentage points.

The script for Ohio's special election is perhaps familiar: An experienced Trump loyalist, two-term state Sen.

Trump took credit for the Republican candidate's performance, calling it "a great victory", even though the contest could be headed to a mandatory recount.

"We've got to find our core", he said. That's fewer votes than the number of outstanding ballots across the district.

The results were helping determine the political landscape - and Trump's standing within his own party - as the GOP defends its House and Senate majorities this fall. The Ohio Republican had been considered by operatives to be an underwhelming candidate.

O'Connor, 34, however, onstage at his campaign headquarters in the central OH district, said the race was a "tied ballgame", with a rematch due in November's regular congressional election for the seat, which opened up when GOP Rep.

Ultimately, the results may not even be known for a while.

Balderson led over O'Connor by 50.1 percent to 49.3 percent, a 1,766-vote lead, with all precincts reporting.

The two races will garner the most national attention on a day when four states hold primary elections: Kansas, Michigan, Missouri and Washington. State Attorney General Bill Schuette won the GOP nomination.

An early supporter of Trump's candidacy and the former chair of the president's now-shut down federal commission on voter fraud, Kobach is best-known nationally for his hardline stance on illegal immigration and for advising the Trump administration on immigration, non-citizen voter registration and the 2020 Census.

In the MI governor's race, progressive favorite Abdul El-Sayed, the 33-year-old former Detroit health official vying to become the nation's first Muslim governor, faces former state Senate Democratic leader Gretchen Whitmer, who is considered the favorite in the race.

Meanwhile progressive duo Sen. Bernie Sanders and ascending political star, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a NY congressional candidate.

Missouri Attorney General Josh Hawley is expected to take on McCaskill, and in MI, military veteran and business executive John James is vying for the chance to knock off Stabenow.

President Trump flew in to the district on Saturday and held a raucous rally in Lewis Center that may have been the final push that put Balderson over the top.
