Yemen government says ready to attend United Nations talks

The Saudi-led coalition denied any responsibility behind the air strikes on a fishing port and fish market that Yemeni medical sources said it killed 26 people in Hodeidah on Thursday. The whole idea behind these attacks is to reinstate the internationally recognised government of President Abu-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in the region.

Qassemi also noted that the daily bombardment of civilian targets and massacre of innocent and defenceless people of Yemen by Saudi and Emirati warplanes should not normalize the crimes committed by the aggressors in the eyes of public opinion at regional, global and worldwide levels and make them indifferent to the crisis and the plight of the Yemenis.

An AP report put the death toll as high as 28 after the air strikes hit close to the city's main public hospital Al Thawra.

The UAE and Saudi alliance have killed at least 55 people including women and children, in Yemen's Red Sea port city of Hodeidah.

Martin Griffiths, the United Nations special envoy for Yemen, said on Thursday he was inviting the Ansar Allah and Saudi-led coalition for talks in Geneva.

They said Sunday that forces backed by a Saudi-led coalition have been trying to seize the rebel-held district of ad-Durayhimi south of Hodeida city and at least 100 have been wounded over a 24-hour period.

The nearest target hit by the coalition on Wednesday or Thursday was more than two kilometres (1.2 miles) away from the two sites, Maliki told a news conference in Riyadh.

"The impact of the strikes is appalling".

Impoverished Yemen has remained wracked by violence since 2014, when Shia Houthi rebels overran much of the country, including the capital, Sanaa, and Al Hudaydah.

"We have had two major waves of cholera epidemics in recent years and unfortunately the trend that we have seen in recent days to weeks suggests that we may be on the cusp of the third major wave", WHO's emergency response director, Peter Salama, told reporters in Geneva.

Speaking at a meeting of the UN Security Council, Griffiths said it is time to resume a political process in Yemen to resolve the crisis, alluding to previous peace talks that failed.

He said there were also many shell fragments outside the hospital, while the Houthis gave conflicting accounts of the attack.

The officials spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to brief the media, while the witnesses did so for fear of reprisal.
