Europe deals with heatwave from Portugal to a Finnish supermarket

With this heat comes uncomfortable, muggy nights for southern Britain, but a tweet from the U.K.'s national weather service on Thursday night reminded Brits that temperatures are much higher in parts of Spain and Portugal. According to the U.N., Sodankyla, Finland hit 89.2°F, or 31.8°C, on July 17, which was an all-time record for that location.

Weather experts say Spain's heat will then spread to the United Kingdom, with predictions of 40C in France and "low 30s" in Britain over the weekend.

Seeking to prevent more deaths after 114 people were killed in two massive forest blazes past year in Portugal, civil protection sent mobile text alerts warning the population of an extreme risk of fires in some regions, including around the capital Lisbon.

Portugal's weather service said the capital reached 44 C on Saturday, surpassing the city's previous record of 43 C set in 1981. Travelers have been warned to stay out of the sun during the hottest part of the day and be aware of the risks of heatstroke, particularly for children and the elderly.

The ties between heat waves and climate change are robust, with climate scientists already tying the Scandinavian and United Kingdom heat waves to climate change.

A spokesperson for the Weather Channel said: "Towards the weekend it will become hotter once more with drier and sunnier skies extending more widely across the British Isles, the best of which will be on Sunday".

The Scandinavian country has over the past weeks had dozens of wildfires, mostly in central, western and northern Sweden, and foreign firefighters helped their Swedish colleagues.

"The South and East will be hottest and it will be a warm weekend for most, although cooler in the North".

In other parts of Europe, Sweden's highest peak, a glacier on the Kebnekaise mountain, is melting at a rate of several centimeters a day.

A Met Office spokesman said: "Temperatures will continue to build, but nothing quite as hot as what we saw towards the end of last week".

"Maximum temperatures will range from 16 to 22C in the north, and 20 to 32C in the south".

Lisbon's temperature reached 43 degrees Celsius. Warm continental air will move to Britain.

Three people died from heatstroke in Spain as Europe sweltered in a record heatwave on Friday, with temperatures hitting a scorching 45 degrees Celsius in some areas and meteorologists saying only scant relief is in sight in the coming days.

CNN's Laura Smith-Spark wrote and reported from London and Pau Mosquera reported from Madrid.
