Israel kills seven militants amid tensions on Syria's border

On Wednesday, Russia's envoy to Syria said that Iranian forces have withdrawn their heavy weapons to a distance of 85 kilometers (53 miles) from the Golan Heights frontier between Israel and Syria. Assault rifles and explosive belts were retrieved from the scene by Israeli forces.

President Bashar al-Assad's sweeping away of rebels in southwestern Syria has anxious Israel, which last week downed a Syrian warplane that it said breached a Golan buffer zone and warned Iranian forces backing him against deploying there.

In a separate development, according to media reports, Russian Federation is planning to deploy military police on the Golan Heights frontier between Syria and Israel and set up eight observation posts. On Thursday, Russia's defense ministry announced a joint operation with United Nations peacekeepers to keep watch over the Golan Heights region.

According to IDF Spokesman Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus, Israel tracked the terror cell as they approached the fence, striking them before they could infiltrate.

Seven Islamic State terrorists were killed in an Israeli attack overnight Wednesday in Syria's Golan Heights.

Because of the recent Syrian government offensive, there are now Islamic State forces "scattered in the area", Conricus said.

Russian Federation announced Wednesday it had reached an agreement to keep Iranian forces 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the Syrian-Israeli frontier.

Most of the Golan Heights have been occupied by Israel since the 1967 war. The peacekeeping mission was halted in 2014 amid the violence in Syrian's civil war over security concerns.

The new Russian posts would be handed over to the Syrian government once the situation stabilized, the ministry said.

Israel has called for Iranian-backed forces to withdraw from Syria, appealing to Russian Federation to enforce their exit. They were believed to be fleeing the Syrian army of President Bashar Assad.

"The IDF is on high alert and readiness and will continue to operate to ensure the security of the citizens of Israel", the army said in a statement. The army's announcement came shortly after Defense Minister Avigdor Lieberman toured a Patriot missile defense battery in northern Israel during a military preparedness drill.
