Firefighters outflank California blaze, last four missing found alive

Firefighters in northern California are defeating the savage, ten-day-old fire blaze that has demolished more than 1,000 homes as experts expatriate the neighborhood with a few individuals being discovered alive. The Carr Fire, which ignited last week, has burned more than 115,000 acres.

The current U.S. fire season has been exacerbated by excessively dry and hot weather conditions, resulting in intense fire fronts and dangerously low percentages of fire containment.

The blaze, stoked by drought-parched vegetation and triple-digit temperatures, has killed six people and reduced 1,555 structures to smoldering ruins, including 10,600 homes. Get the full story in the video above.

Elsewhere, fire authorities, utility crews and police were stepping up efforts to remove hazards such as downed power lines and ruptured gas lines to allow evacuees to return as quickly as possible to areas no longer threatened.

Meanwhile, 32,000 residents are still evacuated from the fires and more than 1,000 homes have been destroyed.

To illustrate his point, Brown told U.S. media the state had already spent more than a quarter of the budget allocated for resources across the entire annual fire season in the month of July alone.

Most of the devastation occurred on the night of July 26, when gale-force winds whipped the blaze into a flaming cyclone that jumped the Sacramento River and roared with little warning into Redding and adjacent towns in the scenic Shasta-Trinity region.

However, authorities who had feared there might be more casualties reported on Wednesday (Thursday NZT) that all those who had been reported missing had been located. Jerry Brown said at a news conference Wednesday.

The fire burning for 11 days in and around the city of Redding is now 200 square miles (518 square kilometers). "They had just been released from the (Mendocino Complex) and were heading to their hotel when they were dispatched to the Vichy Fire, and another Strike Team engine pulled up after them".
