Vettel puts mourning Ferrari ahead of Red Bull

Vettel puts mourning Ferrari ahead of Red Bull

Wolff said Mercedes was "surprised" Bottas managed to keep the Ferraris at bay for so long.

Lap 47 - Ferrari tell Vettel that his only chance to get past Bottas is to overtake him, as the Finn they don't expect the Finn to make another pit stop.

The victory was Hamilton's record sixth in Hungary, fifth of the season and 67th of his career.

Asked whether "wingman" was something he had to accept, driving for Mercedes, Bottas replied: "We are over halfway of the year".

The circuit is famously hard for overtaking and Bottas, however much it pained him to be told, proved an excellent "wingman" in keeping the Ferraris behind while Hamilton built a buffer.

'There are no positives from today.

Raikkonen had pitted a lap earlier, falling to fifth behind Ricciardo, who had yet to stop.

He was luckier in Hungary but he really needs to take a chill pill if he is to extend this title fight to the wire and not keep self-harming.

"We could have only dreamt to be in the position that we are in now", Hamilton said.

His considerable success for McLaren in his first two seasons in Formula One can not be underestimated and are arguably the most impressive first two seasons from any driver in Formula One history. He deserved to finish second, but maybe the word wingman doesn't do him justice. "He just drove a sensational race and helped Lewis, in a way, to build the lead".

These five seasons were dominated by Vettel, who finished second once and won the other four championships. We've got a long long way still to go and there's still nine or ten races. "Fair enough, I think a racing incident", he added.

Meanwhile, Wolff also sought to clarify his comment.

"Some out of context news around." he tweeted. "Valtteri's race was the ideal wingman's race, and I don't mean in championship terms". There is no need to. His auto was relatively unscathed at the end compared to Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo's cars, which endured a couple of hairy carbon-crunching moments each, not least in the final minutes of the race when Bottas' tyres waved the white flag as Ricciardo attempted a pass around the outside of turn one. I know what he ment (sic).

For the second consecutive race it should have been a Ferrari cakewalk - yet Lewis Hamilton walked away with all 25 points.

"I think what we did was OK", said Vettel on the strategy, reckoning teams underestimated the durability of the Ultrasofts.

"I think we had very good speed but with what happened [in qualifying] and after the start we were [only] able to use our speed when we were catching up".

The two late collisions became a major talking point in what proved a relatively quiet race before the summer break. This essentially handed Mercedes a 1-2 on the starting grid, with Valtteri Bottas alongside Hamilton.
