Abdullah endorses USA talks with Taliban in Qatar

NYT described the meetings as "a reversal of a longstanding United States policy" of not holding direct talks with the Taliban.

US diplomats held direct talks with the Taliban marking the first face-to face peace effort since President Trump gave the nod for such negotiations on July 15.

The meeting between a delegation led by Alice Wells, deputy assistant secretary in the State Department's Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs, and Taliban representatives was first reported in The Wall Street Journal but has not been officially confirmed.

USA officials neither confirmed nor denied a meeting took place.

If talks did take place, it wold mark a major shift towards the Taliban, and an insinuation that the Americans may be interested to wrap up the longest conflict in United States history.

"The overall atmosphere of the meeting was very good and the discussions were also productive", said the Taliban official, but he shared no further details.

It was not clear when the next meeting would be held or with whom, but the Taliban official who spoke out was certain one would be held.

NYT, WSJ and VOA reported that the State Department refused to comment when contacted by their correspondents but did not deny the Taliban claim that senior USA diplomats had met their representatives.

Taliban's five-year rule over at least three quarters of Afghanistan came to an end when the USA and its allies invaded the Asian country on October 7, 2001 as part of Washington's so-called war on terror.

In Kabul, the Afghanistan President's office, ARG, on Saturday welcomed any support for peace efforts. "Any negotiations over the political future of Afghanistan will be between the Taliban and Afghan government", said the State Department official. As stated by the Taliban, we can expect more and more such meeting between the US, Afghanistan and the Taliban for purposeful dialogues.

Waziri declined to comment, however, on whether the government was aware that the Americans had met with the Taliban in Doha.

After the declared end of combat operations in 2014, most American troops withdrew to major population areas in the country, leaving Afghan forces to defend remote outposts.

By most objective measures, President Donald Trump's year-old strategy for ending the war in Afghanistan has produced few positive results.
