Mugabe says he will vote for the opposition in Monday's poll

'I can not vote for Zanu-PF, ' the ruling party he long controlled.

"The more the merrier", Chamisa said in response to a question about Mugabe's endorsement.

Mnangagwa, who is known as "the crocodile", an animal famed in Zimbabwe for its stealth and ruthlessness, has promised to deliver jobs and is seen as open to economic reforms.

President Emmerson Mnangagwa has responded to Mugabe's press conference in which the former leader bashed Mnangagwa and the Zanu PF for violating the country's democracy and accused them of ill treating him and his relatives. "I will make my choice among the other 22 (candidates) but it is a long list".

The former deputy of Robert Mugabe was sacked weeks before the veteran leader was deposed previous year - and they are more at odds now than ever before.

Mr Chamisa, who became an MP at the age of 25, could become Zimbabwe's youngest president.

The frontrunners in addressing these challenges are Zanu-PF's President Mnangagwa, 75, and the MDC's Mr Chamisa, 40.

He said: "The choice is clear, you either vote for Mugabe under the guise of Chamisa or you vote for a new Zimbabwe under my leadership and ZANU-PF".

Elections under Mugabe were marred by fraud and often deadly violence, and this year's campaign has been dogged by accusations that the result will be rigged.

The MDC on Sunday again raised allegations of a flawed electoral roll, ballot paper malpractice, voter intimidation and bias in the Zimbabwe Electoral Commission (ZEC).

The press conference was aimed at "expressing his feelings on tomorrow's elections".

Emmerson Mnangagwa however faces a determined opposition, led by Nelson Chamisa, who leads the Movement for Democratic Change.

"Voting for a person who we love and respect, but who has no chance of winning the national election for the presidency will be an irresponsible betrayal of the country", he added, in apparent reference to MDC-T candidate Thokozani Khupe.

Mr Mnangagwa, a former Mugabe confidante, has tried to recast himself as a voice for reform, inviting back dozens of election observers and pledging a free and fair vote.

With 5.6 million registered voters, the results of the presidential, parliamentary and local elections are expected by Aug 4.

A run-off vote is scheduled for September 8 if no presidential candidate wins at least 50% in the first round.
