Hamilton secures pole in Hungary with astonishing drive

Vettel, who had also been fastest on Friday, reported some debris in his auto at one point. Teammate Max Verstappen could manage only seventh behind French driver Pierre Gasly's Toro Rosso auto and the Renault of fifth-place Carlos Sainz.

Lap 64: Highlighting how much time Raikkonen and Vettel are losing behind Bottas, Hamilton's lead climbs to over 20 seconds.

Championship leader Lewis Hamilton was fourth in the second Mercedes behind the two Finns, but ahead of the two Red Bulls of Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen.

Lap 15: Raikkonen is the first of the frontrunners to pit but suffers from a slow stop after the rear-left is slow to connect.

Sadly for the under-pressure Vandoorne, after his best race for some time, the Belgian's gearbox broke with 19 laps to go and he had to retire.

Hamilton made a good start from pole position to lead Bottas into Turn 1 as Raikkonen lost third place to teammate Vettel in Turn 2. It follows his victory in Germany and hands him a major advantage in the title fight.

With the two Mercedes leading the way, Hamilton started to ease a lead over his teammate and it became clear that the race would boil down to a strategic battle. Bottas covered him off a lap later by mirroring the strategy, meaning both drivers were facing either a two-stop race or a monster stint on their new tyres.

"The gaps between Gasly, Verstappen and Grosjean changed over a very short section of the track, and under the conditions the stewards determined that the impeding was not, as the rule states, "unnecessary impeding" and therefore take no further action". An early pit stop for Raikkonen on lap 14 triggered a response from Mercedes a lap later with Bottas, and now Vettel was in second behind Hamilton.

With no rain forecast for Sunday's race, Vettel is hopeful that Ferrari's pace advantage in the dry will help him climb up the order.

Not only did he clash with Vettel but he made another error in the incident with Ricciardo, who despite being forced off track caught the Mercedes again. Secondly, for driving serenely all afternoon - getting away well from the grid, opening up a lead that put him beyond DRS attack, and then consistently plugging away lap after lap.

That meant Bottas then had to run a total of 55 laps on his set of soft tyres and his strained rubber ultimately resulted in the mistake that caused the collision on lap 66.
