Giuliani: 'I feel sorry' for Cohen

Prosecutors in the US Attorney's office for the Southern District of NY have been investigating Cohen for months, though he has not been charged with any crime and has repeatedly denied any wrong doing.

CNN reported Thursday that "sources" told the network Cohen claims Trump knew ahead of time about the June 2016 meeting and "is willing to make that assertion to special counsel Robert Mueller".

Cohen told associates that Trump responded with encouragement, the person said.

Donald Trump has denied fresh claims he had advance knowledge of a meeting between his son and a Russian lawyer ahead of the 2016 United States presidential election.

"I've always thought that if Mueller believed that Cohen was somehow the key to proving a collusion case against Trump, there's no way he lets that case walk to the Southern District of New York", McCarthy said, referencing Mueller's referral to the district that led the Federal Bureau of Investigation to raid Cohen's office, home, and hotel room in April.

Cohen is not reported to have any evidence to back up this claim.

Cohen made his claims a day after releasing a covert recording of himself and Trump discussing a payment to be made to a former Playboy model, Karen McDougal, who says she had an affair with Trump years ago.

We also later learned that Trump himself had been involved in the crafting of his son's initial statement to the media about the meeting, a revelation that contradicted past claims that he was uninvolved.

Giuliani also said Cohen is "the kind of witness that can really destroy your whole case" and called Cohen, who was a top Trump Organization attorney for a decade, a "pathological liar".

"Michael Cohen is getting caught up in his lies", Giuliani said in an interview with the Washington Post. "Anything you can think of", the source said. The president's usual allies are trying to help by treating Cohen as a traitor to the Trump cause, according to The Guardian.

Trump tweeted, "NO", he "did NOT know of the meeting with my son, Don jr".

That meeting is at the center of the special counsel's ongoing investigation into possible collusion between Russian officials and Trump's campaign.

Democrats have been skeptical of his account, pointing to phone calls made by Trump Jr. on June 6, 2016, which they believe may show that Trump's son informed his father about the meeting in advance.

Mr Trump's denial about his knowledge of the meeting comes as Russian President Vladimir Putin said he had invited Mr Trump to Moscow, and that both he and Mr Trump were ready for further summits, but that conditions needed to be right for a meeting to take place.

But according to Goldberg on Friday, Giuliani doesn't appear to be helping Trump with his uncontrolled response to the Cohen revelations, which include his flip-flopping on Cohen's credibility.

The potential problem with that argument is that for those "years" that Giuliani is referring to, Cohen was one of Trump's closest advisers.

Alas, Trump denies that he knew about the meeting in advance.

Cohen recently turned to prominent attorney and lobbyist Lanny Davis, a long-time associate of Bill and Hillary Clinton, to represent him.

Trump complained that he had returned from a trip Midwest Thursday "only to be greeted with the ridiculous news" that Mueller and his team "cannot find Collusion... so now they are looking at my Tweets (along with 53 million other people)".
