MLB Rumors: Cubs Acquire Pitcher Cole Hamels In Trade With Rangers

Cole Hamels will be heading to the Chicago Cubs in a trade from the Texas Rangers, so long as everyone involved passes their physicals.

The Cubs will get Hamels in exchange for righties Eddie Butler and Rollie Lacy and a player to be named later.

But if the deal goes through, the Cubs will be banking on Hamels's strong road numbers this season - 4-2 with a 2.93 ERA and an opponents' OPS of.697 in 10 starts. He is just 1-3 with an 11.12 ERA in four starts in July. He played for the Phillies from 2006 to 2015 and won a World Series, a World Series MVP and an NLCS MVP with them in 2008.

The Cubs' acquistion of left-hander Cole Hamels from the Rangers became official Friday morning. "That was something I wanted to be able to do in Texas, and it didn't happen". He compiled a 3.98 ERA in two seasons in Chicago.

Hamels, who had been scheduled to start for Texas on Saturday in Houston, said he wasn't sure yet when he would make his first start for Chicago. He was traded to Texas six days later. All-Star Jon Lester and Mike Montgomery, who began the year in the bullpen, have been their most consistent performers. Darvish is signed through 2023.

The MLB non-waiver trade deadline is next Tuesday July 31. The Cubs referenced that no-hitter in a tweet after the trade was announced. By the end of the day, they had completed the deal for Hamels.

Butler, 27, was out of minor-league options. This season, the lefty has a 4.72 ERA with 114 strikeouts in 114.1 innings pitched. He was sidelined for about three months with a groin injury before recently returning.
