Zoo paints stripes on donkey to make visitors think it’s a zebra

An Egyptian zoo has been caught trying to pass off a donkey as a zebra.

Sarhan's pics of the suspicious zebras went viral after he posted them on Facebook.

Zebras have black snouts, and smaller ears than donkey.

The freakish creature was spotted by student Mahmoud A.Sarhani who was visiting the recently opened animal sanctuary at the International Garden municipal park.

A zookeeper has allegedly painted black stripes onto donkeys to make them look like zebras.

The image, showing the animal with smudges on its face, attracted attention online before experts gave their view on its species.

Cairo's International Garden Municipal Parkhas denied that this is a painted donkey. But Mr Sarhan said: 'I realised from the first look that it was a painted donkey.

According to the BBC, zoo director Mohamed Sultan has insisted that the animals are not fake.

The owner of the zoo justified the pain adorned animals by saying it would have cost large sums of money to smuggle the animals into Gaza due to Israeli restrictions on the importing of live animals. And in 2013, a Chinese zoo had a mastiff dog labelled as a Tibetan lion.

"The first time we used paint but it didn't look good", the zoo's proprietor told Reuters at the time.
