Ozil has 'respect of every player', says Arsenal boss

Arsenal's Mesut Ozil avoided any talk of the controversy surrounding his withdrawal from worldwide football and has opted to focus on the club's preseason friendly tournament in Singapore.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan says he spoke with Mesut Ozil after the midfielder's retirement from playing for Germany.

Spaniard Emery, who has also managed Valencia, Sevilla and Paris St Germain, was brought in to replace Arsene Wenger after the Frenchman ended his nearly 22-year tenure at the helm of the North London club at the conclusion of last season.

"He has experience, he has quality and he has a great mentality and we are going to help him feel good and to show his quality with us".

The former Real Madrid man claimed the DFB and senior figures in German football had not done enough to protect him following Joachim Loew's side's group-stage exit, suggesting he had been made a scapegoat due to his background, even stating: "If we win, I'm German".

"For Ozil it's one thing in the national team and another thing with us".

"We want to make him feel free".

"We are expecting good matches against Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid". Emery has not held private talks with Ozil over his global situation, with the Spaniard taking the view that it is better to give the player "normality" rather than create an even bigger fuss.

And for us the normality helps him to feel good every day in the training sessions.

The German Football Association said it "emphatically rejected" Ozil's accusations of racism. Emery is keen to appoint five captains, which is a model followed by clubs including Barcelona in Spain, but is yet to announce his chosen leaders.

"It is with a heavy heart and after much consideration that because of recent events, I will no longer be playing for Germany at global level whilst I have this feeling of racism and disrespect", he said.

"We hope by the start of the season he will be fit and ready to perform".

"He is a key player for us so obviously he is the main candidate [to become captain]".
