The saber-rattling began when Iranian President Hassan Rouhani cautioned Trump not to "play with the lion's tail", saying that conflict with Iran would trigger the "mother of all wars" - prompting the furious salvo from the USA leader. "BE CAUTIOUS!", he wrote.

Iran has threatened to block oil shipments from the Strait of Hormuz in the Gulf if countries heed USA calls to stop buying Iranian oil under US pressure.

"Major European banks and companies are already suspending their activities in Iran and more will follow suit once USA sanctions are back".

On Monday, Trump took aim at The Washington Post for highlighting the lack of solid results and reporting, citing unnamed officials, that the U.S. president was frustrated by it.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised Mr Trump for his "strong stance" on Iran.
