Man Dies From Flesh-Eating Bacteria After Eating Oyster At Florida Restaurant

A 71 year old man has died due to contracting a bacterial infection after eating raw oysters at a restaurant in Florida, said the health officials.

Infection with a bacterium through the gastrointestinal tract usually does not lead to death, but people with weakened immune systems or chronic liver diseases is still in the area of special risk.

The department did not release the name of the restaurant where the man ate the tainted shellfish.

Though such infections are rare-only about 205 United States cases per year, according to the CDC-the Florida Department of Health notes that exposure is most common from May to October, when the saltwater the bacteria inhabits is warmest. Vibrio Vulnificus causes high fever, diarrhea and stomach pains.

"That site may be tender, raw, warm to the touch, kind of appear as a skin infection and then once again as the bacteria progresses or infection progresses, it can get into the blood causing a more severe illness", Drennon said. Nonetheless, it said that this is the first confirmed case and death of Vibrio vulnificus in Sarasota County this year.

"Infections are rare but exposures occur more commonly during the summer months from May to October, when the water is warmer", Florida Department of Health representatives told the Tampa Bay.

A recent study showed that people with these pre-existing medical conditions were 80 times more likely to develop Vibrio vulnificus bloodstream infections than healthy people.

Oysters, clams, and mussels need to be cooked thoroughly since infection may be contracted through consumption of undercooked shellfish.

Experts recommend those with the open wound not to enter brackish seawater without protection. In 2017, there were two cases and also no fatalities. "So far this year, there have been a total of 16 cases of Vibrio vulnificus statewide with three confirmed deaths".
