Trump arrives in Helsinki, to hold summit with Putin

The top US intelligence official on Monday stood by what he called "clear" assessments of Russian meddling in the 2016 election after President Donald Trump cast doubt on that conclusion following a summit with Russian leader Vladimir Putin.

"I will absolutely bring that up", Trump said of Russian meddling in the 2016 election.

That tweet came before the "CBS Evening News" broadcast an interview with Trump in which he cast doubt on Coats' recent warning that the nation is susceptible to a large-scale cybersecurity attack. "That changed, about four hours ago".

Huntsman tells NBC's "Meet the Press" that he expects that the two presidents will talk about "everything from meddling in the election to areas where we have some shared interests". "But if we can get along with Russian Federation, that's a good thing", Trump noted.

"I'm sure we'll be meeting again in the future often", he said.

"I hadn't thought of that", Trump said. He says he ran a "brilliant campaign and that's why I'm president".

Sen. Bob Corker, R-Tenn., the head of the Foreign Relations Committee, expressed disbelief Monday that Trump did not back up US intelligence agencies. "I think we have great opportunities together as two countries that frankly we have not been getting along very well for the last number of years". Noting that "mutual interests abound", he said he gave specific suggestions on dealing with crises under discussion.

Trump, meanwhile, has numerous talking points on the agenda, including the ongoing conflict in Syria and the annexation of Crimea.

Some Republicans have urged Trump to forcefully confront Putin about the election meddling, while Democratic lawmakers urged the president to scrap the summit altogether.

Putin also handed Trump a soccer ball, in honor of Russia's successful hosting of the World Cup tournament this year and the United States picking up hosting duties in 2026.

Trump quickly added, "If they had it, it would've been out by now".

That attack on the alliance came on the heels of Trump's jarring appearance at a North Atlantic Treaty Organisation summit in Brussels, where he harshly criticized traditional allies over "delinquent" defense spending only to later confirm his commitment to the military alliance that has always been a bulwark against Russian aggression.

But Trump has insisted it is "a good thing to meet". "We, hopefully, can do something about that because it's not a positive force, it's a negative force".

Trump hasn't announced specific goals for his meeting with Putin, but said that "nothing bad is going to come out of it and maybe some good will come out".

Hundreds of people in the vicinity of the palace turned out to watch and take photos of the motorcade, and some held signs and flags.

But Bolton said Sunday said the hacking of Democratic emails during 2016 campaign was a serious matter and he found it "hard to believe" that Putin was unaware of it. In Scotland, where Trump took a break between official visits to play golf at one of two resorts he owns in the country, there were protests in Glasgow and Edinburgh.
