McCain calls Trump's news conference with Russia's Putin 'disgraceful'

President Donald Trump, while standing alongside Russian President Vladimir Putin, refused to acknowledge what major US major intelligence agencies have been saying for more than a year: That Russian nationals, following orders from Putin, interfered in the 2016 election and carried out cyberattacks on American political figures.

Mr. Trump stunned onlookers by repeatedly defending Putin during the press conference from allegations that Russian Federation interfered in the 2016 election and casting doubt on conclusions to that effect made by US intelligence agencies.

After a one-on-one meeting today in Helsinki, Russian President Putin admitted that he was rooting for Trump to win the 2016 United States election, while both men denied any foreign interference in the election's outcome.

McCain joined other congressional Republicans on Monday in contradicting Trump and acknowledging Russia's interference in the 2016 presidential election.

On Friday, the Justice Department laid out details of what it said was a far-reaching hacking scheme in an indictment of 12 Russian agents whom it accused of trying to disrupt the US election.

Mr Trump noted the Russian president's "powerful" denial of any interference in the 2016 United States election.

"I wanted Trump to win because he spoke about normalising Russian relations", Putin said in a post-meeting press conference.

This comes just several days after Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced that 12 Russian intelligence officers were being indicted for election interference as part of special counsel Robert Mueller's probe.

But Trump made it clear he believed the Russian leader when Putin denied his country had any hand in meddling in United States political affairs.

At the opening of the joint press conference, Putin declared that "the Cold War is a thing of past, the era of acute ideological confrontation of the two countries is a thing of remote past, is a vestige of the past".

Trump was swiftly criticized by Sen. He again denied Kremlin interference in the election but offered to allow Mueller to observe interrogations of the agents by Russian authorities.

"I'm shaking my head like everyone else you've spoken to in the last 30 minutes or so", King said to CNN anchor Anderson Cooper.

Days before the summit, Coats had spoken publicly of his concerns about cyber threats to US national security and singled out Russian Federation as the most aggressive foreign actor in that arena. "We should have had this dialogue a long time ago, a long time, frankly, before I got to office".

Last week, U.S. authorities indicted 12 Russian military intelligence officers for alleged interference in the 2016 presidential vote.

'I have great confidence in my intelligence people, ' he added, 'but I will tell you that President Putin was extremely strong and powerful in his denial today.

"Today's negotiations reflected our joint wish - our joint wish with President Trump to readdress this negative situation in the bilateral relationship", he said. "Let me say this, I don't see any reason why it would be". "Because he talked about bringing the US-Russia relationship back to normal".

Illinois Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger called Trump's comments rebuking the USA intelligence community assessment "a disservice", though he did not mention Trump by name. I think we're all to blame. We're upgrading things at a very rapid pace.
