Lovren hails Croatia's historic World Cup achievement

Lovren hails Croatia's historic World Cup achievement

And the Liverpool central defender says Croatia were physically fitter and mentally stronger than England.

Harry Kane wore the centre-back ragged, but it was Lovren who successfully marshalled the England captain at the Luzhniki Stadium on Wednesday night.

It followed an uncertain start to the season when Liverpool's defence was constantly identified as a weak link.

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren was written off before Croatia's World Cup semi-final with England.

He said: "It feels incredible, especially after everything that was said about us before the game. In extra-time we showed we are still able with the fatigue to play our game".

Lovren was not impressed when he was reminded of that day by an English reporter.

"Sometimes it is unfair".

"Why didn't you ask me about when I played well?" I think people should respect me also.

"But I like to challenge these strikers and to show to everyone that I'm one of the best defenders". "It's well deserved, I'm really happy for him".

"There is too much about me but, whatever, this is what gets me more motivated to work harder and prove everyone wrong".

Croatia made history by surpassing the 1998 team that lost in the semi- finals. We beat our record of 20 years ago and we had it on our shoulders all the time, this weight.

It is the first time since 1998 that the nation of just over four million people have reached this stage of the competition, after they eliminated Russian Federation in a penalty shoot-out at the weekend. "Simple as that. The difference was mental". Now there is only one game left to make it forever.

"[In Croatia] we went through a lot of s***, war, all these things and even now the situation is not the best". This is what I wanted.

"He's proud of me and what I've achieved", he said.
