Donald Trump's kind-of, sort-of apology to Theresa May

Donald Trump's kind-of, sort-of apology to Theresa May

In the incendiary interview, with the Sun newspaper, the United States leader criticised Mrs May's handling of Brexit negotiations, hailed Boris Johnson - who quit the cabinet earlier this week - as a future and "great Prime Minister" and said there was too much immigration in Europe.

May said there are no limits to Britain doing trade deals once Britain leaves the European Union, adding: "We will do a trade deal with the USA and others around the world".

Trump said May "didn't listen" to his views on how she should negotiate Brexit, but that was "fine". "She's a total professional, because when I saw her this morning I said, 'I want to apologize, because I said such good things about you"'.

His interview likewise came after May recently announced a path forward on Brexit that met criticism from members of her own government, including Boris Johnson, who resigned as foreign secretary on Monday. He also said a rival politician, Boris Johnson, would make a "great prime minister".

"I think they like me a lot in the UK", Mr Trump had said in Brussels.

He confirmed that he had threatened to pull United States troops out of Europe at the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation meeting in Brussels during the week, but said the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation countries had come together and agreed to increase military spending which would make them stronger and more unified.

Downing Street had hinted in advance they were expecting a more emollient tone from the president. I haven't been there in a long time. "I didn't criticize the prime minister", Trump falsely claimed.

"I didn't criticise the PM", Trump said at a press conference at the prime minister's official retreat in Chequers on Friday afternoon.

At the news conference, Trump brought up the interview, and sought to clarify that Johnson would indeed be a good prime minister - but May is too.

Trump said the interview omitted his praise of May, and that his staff had taped the interview: "It's called fake news and we solve a lot of problems with the good old recording instrument". "A great job. And I mean that", Trump said.

Hundreds gathered under a large balloon depicting Trump as an angry baby while others shouted and held signs aspiring to show the president he wasn't welcome.

Queen Elizabeth II is scheduled to host the president and first lady for tea at Windsor.

Mr Trump used the interview with the Sun to lay into Mr Khan, who criticised the American leader as "ill-informed" over a tweet following the London Bridge attack in June 2017.

The two leaders spoke after meeting at Chequers, the prime minister's country estate.

The president also renewed his war of words with Sadiq Khan, saying the London mayor has "done a very bad job on terrorism".

GMB/status/1017669404115587077?"Of course we stand shoulder to shoulder in adversity, and it was really comforting when Americans sent messages of support when we had terrorist attack past year", Khan said, "but when we think you're wrong we should say you're wrong - that's what a special relationship is all about".
