Trump slams North Atlantic Treaty Organisation spending on eve of departure for summit

Trump asserted earlier Wednesday that Germany is "totally controlled" by and "captive to Russia" because of a pipeline project. "And I think you can have no doubt, Mr. President, that this is an investment in common American defense and security, which can't be said with confidence about Russian and Chinese spending", he added. "I'm very glad that today we are united in freedom, the Federal Republic of Germany".

While the United States and Europe have historically been close military and economic allies, President Donald Trump has upended that order by repeatedly taking Europe to task over defense spending and trade while pursuing a closer U.S. relationship with adversary Russian President Vladimir Putin.

That extraordinary rhetoric represents Trump's strongest attack to date on North Atlantic Treaty Organisation allies - even as he himself prepares to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin next week in an effort to improve U.S.

European Union President Donald Tusk on Tuesday delivered a strongly worded statement directed at President Donald Trump amid his ongoing criticism of NATO: "Appreciate your allies".

Mr. Tusk tweeted at the USA president early Tuesday morning, warning, "US doesn't have and won't have a better ally than European Union. And dear Europe, spend more on your defense, because everybody expects an ally that is well-prepared and equipped". He will then fly to Helsinki, Finland, where he plans to meet with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

The president's startling tirade against Germany early on Wednesday included suggestions that the country's support for Nord Stream 2, a pipeline project that would bring gas from Russian Federation to Germany, was a security threat to Europe. "We're discussing military expenditure. talking about trade", Trump told reporters who were allowed in to the meeting room. "Hopefully someday, maybe, he'll be a friend", said Trump. "Will they reimburse the USA?" he tweeted.

According to the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, the European Union "is the top export market for the United States at $501 billion in goods and services in 2016".

Ms. Merkel said they were discussing migration and trade.
