Trump to announce pick for Supreme Court

The Center for American Progress Action Fund, which is affiliated with Tanden's group, is among the groups taking part in a rally at the Supreme Court tonight to protest Trump's pick. Braun said Monday that the president has chosen another outstanding justice in Kavanaugh.

The senator had stumped publicly for her and called her an outstanding judge. Momentum appeared to be with Kavanaugh and Hardiman, though the process has been fluid. "I'm going to try and do something, but I don't think I'll be so specific".

Here's why: Kavanaugh's court rarely issues opinions on Monday. Critics believe Kavanaugh didn't push back enough in the case, Garza v. Hargan, while supporters say it illustrates his instinct towards compromise while standing firm on conservative values.

Mike Sacks, a reporter for the Fox television affiliate in NY and a self-described lapsed lawyer, was among the first to make the connection on Twitter.

Calling Trump's Supreme Court nomination an "honor and privilege", Kavanaugh addressed a crowd in the White House's East Room alongside his wife and two daughters. They must defend 10 seats in the Senate in states that President Trump won.

It also plans to run ads next week in Manchin's, Donnelly's and Heitkamp's home states with a softer tone, asking them to continue protecting people with pre-existing health conditions by opposing a nominee who'd threaten that.

In preparing for the unveiling, Trump aides are inviting senators who will vote on the nominee to the White House ceremony, including moderate Democrats who will be targeted as possible yes votes.

Trump's selection will set up a confirmation showdown in the U.S. Senate, where his fellow Republicans hold a slim 51-49 majority, though with ailing Senator John McCain battling cancer in his home state of Arizona they now can muster only 50 votes. Susan Collins of ME, who has expressed disquiet about the nomination of a judge who might overturn Roe v. Wade. "I look forward to meeting soon with Judge Kavanaugh", said Senator Gardner.

Senators are trying to frame the debate before Trump's 9 p.m. announcement.

With little warning, the Republican administration announced it is freezing payments under an "Obamacare" program that protects insurers with sicker patients from financial losses. Barletta was elected to the U.S. House in 2010-a Republican "wave" year-and was also rumored to be on Trump's short list for labor secretary during the transition.

Trump's success in confirming conservative judges, as well as a Supreme Court justice, has cheered Republicans amid concerns about his limited policy achievements and chaotic management style.

John Roberts now serves as the chief White House correspondent for FOX News Channel (FNC).

Trump kept the suspense running through the weekend, teasing the announcement for maximum dramatic effect, but by Monday afternoon was reported to have made his pick among a shortlist of four judges, all with solid right-wing credentials.

Former New Hampshire Sen.

Trump is hoping to replicate his successful nomination of Justice Neil Gorsuch previous year. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania - up for re-election - says he'll be opposed.

They include Judge Raymond Kethledge, 51, who sits on the 6th US Circuit Court of Appeals, who would puncture the Ivy League aura that cloaks the Supreme Court since he studied law at the University of MI and not Harvard or Yale. He cites involvement of the conservative Heritage Foundation think tank in drafting the list. The race is not expected to be competitive.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said opponents were using "40-year-old scare tactics" over abortion and other issues but they "will not stop us from doing the right thing". Regardless of his choice, it's likely that the closely divided Senate will be holding a momentous confirmation vote just weeks before the midterm election. The two groups were key in developing the list of candidates used by President Trump to make a decision. Heidi Heitkamp of North Dakota, Joe Donnelly of IN and Joe Manchin of West Virginia. Justice Kennedy devoted his career to securing liberty.

With customary fanfare, Trump planned to unveil his choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy on prime-time TV. You can't go wrong.

Departing his New Jersey golf club on Sunday afternoon, Trump told reporters he was still making up his mind. Before that, Kavanaugh served for more than five years in the Bush White House from July 2003 until May 2006.
