Serena Williams storms back to reach Wimbledon semifinals

Serena Williams storms back to reach Wimbledon semifinals

Waiting to take her on will be a certain Serena Williams - a player who knows what it takes to succeed at Wimbledon having already triumphed at the All England Club seven times.

Serena Williams celebrates after winning against Italy's Camila Giorgi during their women's singles quarter-final match on the eighth day of the 2018 Wimbledon Championships at The All England Lawn Tennis Club in Wimbledon, London, July 10, 2018. Williams has more wins in a major after losing a first set (39) than any other player in the women's Open era (Chris Evert has 28 and Venus Williams has 27).

They clapped and yelled when Federer's drop volley capped a 16-minute tour de force of a first set in which he won 21 of the first 23 points.

She gave birth to daughter Olympia in September.

All of those wins came in straight sets, with her last victory coming in the round of 128 at the 2016 Australian Open. Serena needs to win three more matches to earn the 24th Grand Slam singles title of her career, a mark which would tie current record holder Margaret Court.

Another added: 'jeez Drake... you gonna come to her work and errrrthing?' I was just trying to stay focused on my serve. The German had suffered five successive first-round defeats at Wimbledon before this year and had clocked up 42 grand slam appearances without progressing beyond the fourth round.

Once Williams had figured out how to break the Giorgi serve, though, in the fourth game of the second set, the momentum changed. Be a good friend and let her win'.

"This is only my fourth tournament back, so I don't feel pressure".

Her dance of delight signalled the end of Giorgi's threat as Williams raced to the finish line. And I feel like I'm back.

No. 7 Karolina Pliskova, the last of the top-10 women, lost 6-3, 7-6 (1) to Kiki Bertens.

But the title favourite is seven-time champion Serena Williams, seeded 25th after her lengthy maternity leave, and due to face Russian qualifier - and fellow mother - Evgeniya Rodina later on Monday.

And she wasn't the only one to mastermind a comeback from a set down, either, as semi-final opponent Goerges also took the more hard route to ousting Bertens.

Also, Juan Martin del Potro became the last man into the quarterfinals by beating Gilles Simon 7-6 (1), 7-6 (5), 5-7, 7-6 (5).
