Samsung opens world's largest smartphone factory in India

PM Modi, India's Prime Minister will today inaugurated World's largest smartphone factory in Noida.

According to a statement from Samsung, the factory will help almost double its output of mobile devices in India from 68 million units a year to a whopping 120 million units a year.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and South Korean President Moon Jae-in jointly inaugurated Samsung Centre, the world's largest mobile phone factory in Noida.

Samsung announced the expansion of its plant a year ago as part of a $715 million investment in India.

As Samsung can manufacture its full range of phones at this one facility, the company can react to the local market with the population now preferring phones costing below $250 due to levels of income.

Called as Samsung Electronics facility, this massive plant is spread over 35 acres of land in Noida Sector 81 area. More than 120 local factories now assemble mobile phones and accessories like chargers, batteries, powerbanks and earphones in India, according to tech research firm Counterpoint. It recently tripled its Indian manufacturing base by adding four smartphone plants in the country.

Demand for new mobile phones is surging in India, helped in part by billionaire Mukesh Ambani offering US$23 4G feature phones, free voice services and cheap data plans.

"This INR50-billion investment will not only strengthen Samsung's business ties in India, it will also play a key role in India-Korea relations", Modi said in a speech at the inauguration of the plant.

In 2012, Samsung became the leader in mobile phones in the country and the Noida facility rolled out the first-ever "Galaxy S3" device. The Korean giant wants the unit production to go as high as 120 million in three years and for that it is hiring 5,000 new employees.

Speaking on the occasion, the Prime Minister described the occasion as a special one, in the journey to make India a global manufacturing hub. India is using 40 crore smartphones, 32 crore people are using broadband technology.

The 35-acre Samsung Electronics facility in Noida sector 81 was added in 2005, and in June previous year, the South Korean giant had announced Rs 4,915 crore investment to expand the Noida plant to double the production.

70,000 employees are now working for Samsung, and they are looking forward to expand their offline presence to 1.5 lakh retail outlets.
