North Korean, US officials seek clarity in second day of Pyongyang talks

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Sunday shrugged off North Korean accusations of "gangster-like" behaviour and said sanctions on Pyongyang would only be lifted with "final" denuclearisation.

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Saturday said the Trump administration considered the meeting "very important" as the "first senior-level face-to-face meeting" between Pyongyang and Washington since June's DPRK-U.S. summit.

The U.S. delegation left Pyongyang later in the day, with the Secretary of State due to hold a three-way press conference in Tokyo with South Korean and Japanese counterparts on Sunday.

Speaking in Tokyo after two days of intense discussions in Pyongyang, Pompeo insisted the talks were making progress and were being conducted in "good faith."

Though Trump claimed "there is no longer a nuclear threat from North Korea" following the Singapore summit, US officials cited by NBC News reported that the country is still covertly producing uranium for nuclear weapons.

It's been almost one month since President Trump met with North Korean dictator Kim Jong Un in Sinagpore.

Two days of talks with senior North Korean officials had "made progress", he said, and included a "detailed and substantive discussion about the next steps". At the summit, Mr. Kim committed to complete denuclearization in return for US security guarantees.

Pompeo, who was on his third visit to Pyongyang, began the outreach when he was still Trump's Central Intelligence Agency director and remained the pointman on negotiations after the process became public and he became secretary of state.

One hoped-for breakthrough would be the return of the remains of USA troops killed during the Korean War. "This really shows the unwavering bond of the Japan-U.S. alliance", Abe said.

Trump has already faced criticism for being too quick to make security concessions to Kim, including his unilateral suspension of military exercises with South Korea.

Speaking in Tokyo, Pompeo said his efforts to push the North on disarmament had the backing of the entire global community.

Trump's national security adviser, John Bolton, says North Korea could dismantle its nuclear arsenal within a year, but other USA officials have said they hope it can be accomplished by the end of Trump's first term in the White House, in January 2021.

South Korean Minister of Foreign Affairs Kang Kyung-wha said that the North had balked at a written pledge for "complete, verifiable and irreversible denuclearization" for historical reasons, but stressed that the goal remained the same whether or not that exact phrase was used. "There are things that I have to clarify", he said.

"Proving once again that only fools rush in, Trump forced a summit for cheap headlines", Scarborough wrote, continuing the ongoing feud between himself and president Trump.

In light of the once-unimaginable prosperity and partnership we have with Vietnam today, I have a message for Chairman Kim Jong-un: "President Trump believes your country can replicate this path", Pompeo said. If not, his high-stakes North Korea gambit could join a long list of failed nuclear deals with Pyongyang.

Pompeo pointed to an incremental development in North Korea's commitment to return the remains of missing American soldiers. Pompeo never definitively said he would not meet with Kim. When we spoke to them about the scope of denuclearization, they did not push back.
