Conservatives line up behind possible Trump Supreme Court finalists

President Donald Trump has completed his scheduled interviews for the Supreme Court vacancy, an official familiar with the search says, as he moves closer to settling on his selection to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy. Other contenders that have received serious interest include federal appeals judges Amul Thapar, Thomas Hardiman and Joan Larsen. Trump is choosing his nominee from a list of 25 candidates vetted by conservative groups.

Trump's choice to replace retiring Justice Anthony Kennedy, often a swing vote among the nine justices, has the potential to remake the high court for a generation.

It's why the pro-life views of Barrett, a devout Catholic and mother of seven, have loomed large in the debate.

"She was stunned to see the sheer crushing volume of texts and emails", recalled longtime friend and University of Michigan Law School colleague Sarah C. Zearfoss.

During her confirmation hearing for the 7th Circuit, Sen.

Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of NY called the GOP's tack "the height of hypocrisy", in light of the GOP-controlled Senate's refusal to consider then-President Barack Obama's nominee before the presidential election in 2016 after the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. "They are outstanding people, they are really incredible people in so many different ways, academically and every other way and I had a very, very interesting morning". "They are shaped by love of Holy Scripture, prayer and community; and the Church's mission is richer for their presence". In November, voters will decide on a proposed constitutional amendment aimed at precluding arguments for access to abortion under the state constitution, should the Supreme Court ever send the question of abortion back to the states.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine, has said she would not support a Supreme Court nominee who has been hostile toward Roe v. Wade. Joe Donnelly, a moderate on abortion rights seeking re-election in a state Trump carried by 19 percentage points in 2016.

Some conservatives have pointed to Kethledge as a potential justice in the mould of Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first Supreme Court nominee a year ago.

"What I am saying is that a nominee's personal views on Roe v. Wade are not relevant to my decision", Collins said.

A Pew Research poll conducted in January found that 69 percent of Americans did not want to see Roe v. Wade overturned. Susan Collins of ME or Alaska's Lisa Murkowski to vote "no", which many view as hard.

The confirmation for Trump's second court pick is expected to be contentious, with the Senate now narrowly divided, 51-49, in favor of Republicans. He is, in some ways, very similar to Judge Kavanaugh.

Mom-of-seven Judge Amy Coney Barrett, 46, a former Notre Dame law professor, became a right-wing heroine previous year when she stood up to grilling from Senate Democrats over her religious faith. Some conservative activists have expressed concern about Kavanaugh's two decades in Washington.

Trump has retreated to his golf resort in Bedminster, N.J., for the weekend, where he'll discuss his choice with chief of staff John Kelly and Vice President Mike Pence.

Some conservatives have pointed to Kethledge as a potential justice in the mold of Neil Gorsuch, Trump's first Supreme Court nominee previous year. He also has a great reputation and as a former law clerk to Justice Kennedy - around the same age. But then, walking away from the meal, Gorsuch said he got an email from the same breakfast mate. Kethledge sided with the majority, joining Judge Jeffrey Sutton's concurring opinion, one of several siding with the man who, under MI law, had no mechanism to petition to dispute his status as "mentally ill" and who was unable to own firearms, despite having led an exemplary life without signs of mental illness for decades. They cite a recent case involving a pregnant teenaged immigrant in federal custody.
