Vettel edges Hamilton to win British Grand Prix

Sebastian Vettel won a thrilling British Grand Prix for Ferrari on Sunday to deny Lewis Hamilton a fifth successive home victory and move eight points clear at the top of the Formula One standings.

The safety vehicle was then deployed for a big crash, which ended Marcus Ericsson's race.

In a race with two late safety auto periods, reigning champion Hamilton went from pole position to the rear of the field before finishing second for Mercedes in a superb fightback.

Raikkonen crossed the line ahead of Valtteri Bottas, who had led with only five laps of the race remaining.

It was Ferrari's first win in Britain since 2011.

Pierre Gasly of Toro Rosso also had an apparent gearbox issue.

The lead had changed hands twice in this race, with the safety vehicle out a couple times as well.

"Because you know that he's going to improve again, so I've got to improve the same and a bit more".

The Englishman clearly blamed Raikkonen, who was handed a 10-seconds penalty, for the crash and found it hard to face the Finn or accept an apology.

"It was my mistake", he said.

"I would struggle to be that precise in order to take someone out", he added.

On another sweltering afternoon in central England, with a track temperature of 53 degrees Celsius (127 degrees Fahrenheit), the drama began immediately.

Hamilton, from his record 76th pole, appeared bogged down as he responded and was instantly in a scrap for third with Raikkonen, who collided with the Briton under braking into Turn Three. He was 19th and last, Brendon Hartley having failed to start in his Toro Rosso.

Hamilton's team mate Valtteri Bottas led and might have won but for a second safety auto, after Renault's Carlos Sainz and Haas's Romain Grosjean collided, that kept the front four nose to tail and only fractions apart.

The Red Bull pairing of Dutch 20-year-old Max Verstappen, victor in Austria last weekend, and Australian Daniel Ricciardo qualified fifth and sixth.

Unexpectedly, Ricciardo made a second stop after 31 laps, lifting Hamilton to fifth as the Australian rejoined sixth, but on softs.

Then the race took another unexpected twist when Swede Marcus Ericsson crashed out at 200mph.

Out came the safety vehicle again.

He said: "Vettel has just been quietly breezing away out in front".

As at Spielberg, Hamilton was concerned by the decision. "Interesting tactics I would say from their side (Ferrari), but we'll do what we can to fight them". "You're the fastest out there by miles", he said. No doubt the safety auto has helped Hamilton and a few others along too. A number of times Vettel attacked at Brooklands after using DRS, and Bottas repelled, with Hamilton similarly fighting Raikkonen but also filling Vettel's mirrors.

The Finn got a ten-second penalty for his troubles, which was roundly applauded by the rather partisan Silverstone crowd.

Lap 19 - Lewis Hamilton is already at third! Kimi Räikkönen (FIN/Ferrari) 3.652, 4. Esteban Ocon (FRA/Force India) 29.930, 8. Kevin Magnussen (DEN/Haas) 33.188, 10. Sergio Pérez (MEX/Force India) 34.708, 12. Lance Stroll (CAN/Williams) 38.106, 14.
