Four boys rescued from flooded Thai cave

Four boys rescued from flooded Thai cave

Each of the rescued boys had two divers with them at all times during the operation. A third boy was reportedly freed at about 7:35 p.m. local time, and the fourth was rescued 12 minutes later.

Expert divers Sunday rescued four of 12 boys from a flooded cave in northern Thailand where they were trapped with their soccer coach for more than two weeks, as a risky and complicated plan unfolded amid heavy rain and the threat of rising water underground.

Chiang Rai provincial acting Gov. Narongsak Osatanakorn, the head of the rescue operation, said divers will need about 10 hours to prepare for the next phase of rescue, but that the operation was going "better than expected".

Thai Navy Seal command Arpakorn Yookongkaew said it was "tough" inside the cave, and the Gunan had passed out as he was making his way out of the cave after have set up oxygen cannisters. The path out is considered especially complicated because of twists and turns in narrow flooded passages.

"This is probably some of the most hard diving there is" in the rescue operation, she said, "and this is the rainy season" with constant fears of more flooding and perilous currents.

Scores of divers were seen entering the cave after dawn on Sunday, and shortly afterwards there were orders for "unnecessary personnel" to clear the area to "help victims".

Monsoon flooding had initially cut off their escape, and rescuers were unable to find them for more than a week.

Their plight has transfixed Thailand and the rest of the world, with more than 1,000 journalists registered to cover the rescue staking out a small patch of muddy land at the top of a hill near the entrance to monitor the race against time.

Rescuers have been racing against the weather ever since they discovered the stranded football squad on Monday after they had already spent nine days underground. "We have tried all possible ways to get the boys out, but sometimes we can't win over nature". He has also thanked worldwide experts who helped find the boys.

A former Navy SEAL and combat swimmer said that the unsafe and harrowing rescue of a soccer team trapped in a flooded Thailand cave was comparable to climbing the tallest mountain in the world. "All four of them are now safe inside the hospital".

They are being rescued in groups. One boy's note said: "I'm doing fine, but the air is a little cold, but don't worry".
