Donald Trump urged to avoid controversial Supreme Court pick

The son of Indian-American immigrants, Thapar is the Nation's first Article III judge of South Asian descent.

Sen. Mitch McConnell, the Republican leader, told President Donald Trump this past week that Judges Raymond Kethledge and Thomas Hardiman presented the fewest obvious obstacles to being confirmed to replace Justice Anthony Kennedy on the Supreme Court, according to Republican officials briefed on the conversation.

Trump has said that he will reveal his pick this Monday, July 9 - 12 days after Kennedy announced his retirement - at 9/8c.

The president whittled the list from 25 names, selected and vetted by the hard-right leaning Federalist Society, after meeting the candidates individually and by talking to White House aides, conservative lawmakers and Vice President Pence.

Hardiman has built a reputation as a reliable conservative on the federal appeals court in Philadelphia, where he has served alongside one of Trump's sisters, Judge Maryanne Trump Barry, who is said to have recommended Hardiman for the Supreme Court vacancy a year ago.

Trump is believed to have narrowed his shortlist down to just three or four candidates. Of those, the shortlist is understood to have boiled down to four judges from various United States courts of appeal - Amy Barrett, Thomas Hardiman, Brett Kavanaugh and Raymond Kethledge.

"This is a nightmare for red-state Democrats to oppose a highly qualified nominee, and all four of these people are highly qualified-been on the court, know what they're doing, mainstream judges", Mr.

Thapar was on the shortlist of candidates after judge Antonin Scalia died in 2016.

Talking to reporters travelling with him to Montana overseas Air Force One, Mr Trump said he has interviewed some "extraordinarily talented and brilliant" people during the process.

Mr Trump has chosen prime time to make the announcement.

He compared Kavanaugh to Chief Justice John Roberts, saying that he "came straight out of the Ivy League to Washington, was never outside the beltway and went to the Bush White House".

Judge Raymond Kethledge of MI, who serves on the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, is seen in this 2017 photo released by Bloomsbury Publishing Inc.in New York, New York, U.S., July 6, 2018.

The Trump administration has refused to take a position on the issue, but Kavanaugh said it was "assumed" by the administration that a teen who is an illegal immigrant in federal custody has a right to have an abortion.

"If we put another two or perhaps three justices on".

Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, may have given a hint to who President Trump's next Supreme Court nominee may be, after repeatedly using a female pronoun in an op-ed on the pick.
