Pakistan ex-PM Nawaz Sharif given 10-year jail term

Pakistan ex-PM Nawaz Sharif given 10-year jail term

Supporters of Pakistan Muslim League - Nawaz hold his pictures as they chant slogans to condemn the verdict of accountability court on an anti-corruption case against ousted Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter, during a protest in Islamabad, Pakistan July 6, 2018.

It was the latest blow to Sharif, just weeks ahead of the country's parliament elections later this month, and also the first verdict against the embattled former premier who has faced a string of trials since he was ousted from office by the Supreme Court previous year for concealing assets overseas.

His daughter Maryam Nawaz has been awarded seven and her husband Captain (retd) Safdar one year imprisonment in the case.

The ruling came weeks before the general elections in Pakistan on July 25 and analysts say it could adversely hit the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), the party headed by Sharif.

Nawaz Sharif, who is in London tending to his critically ill wife, is expected to appeal.

The National Accountability Bureau court accused Sharif and his family of being unable to legitimately show the money trail for the purchase of several luxury properties in London, mostly in the mid-1990s.

Sharif's sons, Hassan and Hussain, have been declared absconders and will be brought home through Interpol.

"Now this is your duty to reject corrupt politicians in the elections", he said.

The court had ordered the properties be confiscated by the federal government.

Sharif had denounced the court proceedings against him as politically motivated and a judicial witch-hunt, often suggesting the hidden hand of the military was to blame.

"This decision is based on injustice".

Shehbaz seeks to fend off the challenge by Imran Khan's PTI. Abbasi said, "At a stage when the court concludes the trial and fixes a date for the final announcement, the accused can not file application for any relief".

The corruption controversy erupted with the publication in 2016 of Panama Papers documenting offshore dealings of the world's rich and powerful. But Nawaz will have to first face formal arrest because an absconder, according to the law, has no right of audience before a court. She has been my life partner for 45 years.

2000-2007 - Allowed to go into exile in Saudi Arabia in 2000 amid reports of a deal with the military, he was given a presidential pardon the day his family left.

"We are very happy today as a big thief has been punished by judiciary", said Imran Khan, a popular former lawmaker whose Pakistan Tehrik-e-Insaf party is also running for office.

One predicts PML-N riding a sympathy vote back to parliament, especially since Nawaz has sold his disqualification to the electorate as a military-judiciary conspiracy.

He then returned home in 2007 and became prime minister for a third time in 2013.

He is a driving force behind Sharif's downfall.
